This is the 30th time England have won the toss in a home Test match and inserted the opposition since 1993. It's only the second time the opposition have reached 300 in their innings. The other occasion was against Australia at The Oval in 2015.

  4. 'A day where eight wickets should have fallen'published at 19:04 British Summer Time 10 June 2022

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

New Zealand are a good team. They are consistent and know how to win Test matches. England are a team who still have deficiencies despite the win at Lord's. Today's fielding isn't anything new from England. What we saw at Lord's we hoped would be something new, but it's back to what we have seen over the past few years. I would be amazed if New Zealand field in that fashion. It was a day where eight wickets should have fallen, and England are going to have bat very well now.

New Zealand opener Will Young to BBC Test Match Special: "I think it's a tough to decide what to do on the wicket. That's cricket. It was nice to form a bit of a partnership.

"I felt well prepared for the series. As an opener you miss out sometimes. I am here and playing another Test and trying to get off to a good start.

"Tom [Blundell] and Daryl [Mitchell] had a great partnership at Lord's and they finished the day off well.

"Losing Kane Williamson was a bit unsettling but the boys bounced back well, there's some good depth at the moment and guys can slot up the order. Michael Bracewell is making his debut which is exciting for him.

"Tom Latham as a captain is a great man, and a great leader. He's experienced and a popular guy too. He's done it plenty of times before and it's nice to have someone like that to call upon.

"Obviously the second new ball, Tom and Daryl got through that and if the get through that first 30 or 40 mins tomorrow, as the cricket cliche goes it will be good for us."

  7. 'We took the aggressive option at the toss'published at 18:58 British Summer Time 10 June 2022

England bowling coach Jon Lewis, speaking to TMS: "Would we have done things differently at the toss? No, I don't think so. The toss was a good decision and was an aggressive option. The captain and coach want us to be aggressive and that's what we did. I thought there was good bowling in periods, and trying to bowl the opposition out as much as possible. The bowlers were aggressive with their lengths.

"Stuart Broad got the crowd going and it brings the best out of him. He looked a threat. We just didn't come out the right side of it today. We missed chances in the field. The boys are working hard and hopefully we will come back with the new ball and do what we did at Lord's.

"Trent Bridge is a fast-scoring ground. If there are any loose deliveries they will get put away. I am sure our guys will be confident on this wicket when they got a chance to bat on it."

  8. 'New Zealand could go really big'published at 18:57 British Summer Time 10 June 2022

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

New Zealand just got on with this morning with the setbacks. Out of anyone in world cricket they are the best at that. New Zealand batted with really good tempo. This partnership between Tom Blundell and Daryl Mitchell is now worth 149 and both played confidently. They could go really big and get to 500 if they can see off that first 30 or 40 minutes.

  9. Postpublished at 18:54 British Summer Time 10 June 2022

New Zealand will be disappointed if they get bowled out for 400 from here I would think.

    They have batted brilliantly.

  10. 'New Zealand will have their eye on 400-450'published at 18:53 British Summer Time 10 June 2022

    Jeremy Coney
Former New Zealand captain on BBC Test Match Special

New Zealand have won the day, but it's a new one tomorrow. If their lower order cave in on Saturday the momentum could change. The wickets fell in little clusters, but this last partnership between Tom Blundell and Daryl Mitchell has been outstanding. They very much complement each other well. They will have their eye on 400 or 450.

  11. 'I don't know how Leach is going to get better'published at 18:51 British Summer Time 10 June 2022

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

My problem with Jack Leach is how he going to get better if he doesn't bowl loads of overs. I am looking at him, and I don't know how he is going to get better. England have to make a decision - if you are going to play him, help him improve. He's been in and out of the side. As a left-arm spinner he has to create that theatre - go wide of the crease, come over the wicket. I don't know how he will get better without the overs. He's not going to get better by sporadically playing here and there. At the minute, from when he started his Test career I don't see any improvement. But I think he could improve if he played more. It's a question of the structure and the system to help the spinners so they bowl more.

  12. 'There's something for the bowlers moving forward'published at 18:49 British Summer Time 10 June 2022

New Zealand batter Devon Conway, who scored 46, speaking to Sky Sports: "We would have taken that [at the start of the day]. We were quite keen to bowl first but after losing the toss, putting on 300 was quite a good effort.

"The pitch didn't do heaps. It was quite a nice surface. It played a lot better than it looked. There was a bit of bounce at times for the bowlers. I got rapped on the gloves at one point but it wasn't too drastic. There's something nice for the bowlers moving forward."

England have been far from perfect in the field too.

Three dropped catches (maybe two and a half to be fair, one of Joe Root's was really hard) and another straight through the middle of two slip catchers is not ideal.

It is a far cry from the close to perfection performance at Lord's last week.

There are two things which would worry me from an England perspective. One flew off a length from Matthew Potts, and Jack Leach got one to spin outside the edge. England need to knock New Zealand over tomorrow for another 50 runs maximum tomorrow. Do what they did at Lord's and come roaring back.

Here are the four wickets that England took today.

They will have definitely hoped for more having inserted New Zealand this morning.

  16. 'A confident captain would have batted first'published at 18:41 British Summer Time 10 June 2022

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

We knew New Zealand would fight back in the Test match. They were bit rusty at Lord's. Both captains are a bit wary of their batting so you can understand why Ben Stokes put them in. A confident captain would have won the toss and said straight away "bat first". However, if you bowl first you have to catch well. England did that at Lord's but here there have been issues. New Zealand will be delighted with day one.

What a day for New Zealand, who could be in match-winning position even on day one. Put into bat without their skipper Kane Williamson and Colin de Grandhomme, beaten at Lord's, and they have responded well. For England it was about the chances that slipped away from them.
