We've got through 87 overs today, so we've lost three.
Obviously not great, but compared to recent times, that is an improvement. The spin of Jack Leach has helped.
Root drops Mitchell (3) and Blundell (47); Blundell also edges through slips on 63
Nicholls, dropped on 17 by Crawley, caught behind off Stokes for 30
Anderson then has Conway caught behind for 46
New Zealand put on 84 for first wicket before openers fall in quick succession
England won toss; NZ captain Williamson out because of Covid-19

NZ 318-4
A maiden to finish.
Daryl Mitchell closes on 81, with Tom Blundell on 67.
New Zealand's day.

The pitch has calmed down a lot and is easier for batting. Jack Leach on at the end is worth a go. I suppose the disappointing thing for him today is the lack of maidens.
Jack Leach is going to bowl the final over of the day.
A maiden from James Anderson.
It was unthreatening with Daryl Mitchell happy to block and leave the 39-year-old.
New Zealand have six more balls to face.
Stuart Broad was fuming when that catch flew through the slips while Zak Crawley and Jonny Bairstow looked at each other.
Mitchell 81, Blundell 67
New Zealand are five minutes away from an absolutely unreal day.
You have to consider that they lost their captain Kane Williamson last night because of Covid-19, they lost the toss this morning and they've scored freely throughout the day.
Close to a perfect day so far.

Mark Burt: Mitchell and Blundell are both very attacking batters but they combine it with control. Pope, Crawley and particularly Bairstow could learn something from them.
Short from James Anderson and Daryl Mitchell hoists it through mid-wicket for another boundary.
He's been brilliant today.

Dave Roche: I wish Zak Crawley could leave the ball like that when he is batting.

England took such good catches in the first Test and now suddenly players are not moving at all.

It was a lovely ball, found the edge and they have just watched it. They have left it for each other. Stuart Broad is not happy at all.
EDGED! Through the slips!
Oh, wow.
Stuart Broad draws the edge from Tom Blundell and the ball goes between Zak Crawley and Jonny Bairstow - at second and third slip - and neither move an inch.
To make matters worse, the ball runs away for four.
Stuart Broad holds his hands out and screams. I imagine it was "howwwww?".
Matthew Potts with the new ball lasts one over.
Stuart Broad - who has figures of 0-69 from his 16 overs - is back on at his home ground.

Dan: Anderson is class isn't he? Looks like he absolutely hates cricket most of the time but is still turning up and 'avin it.
Mitchell 74, Blundell 63
Tidy over from James Anderson.
He zones in on the stumps but the New Zealand pair of Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell, who have now put on 138, are equal to it.
Stuart Broad's unimpressed face has had a fair few outings today...

Big cheers as James Anderson comes on at the Pavilion End. The crowd know the importance of this final part of the day.
Nice. Daryl Mitchell leans into a drive and picks up a single through mid-off.
There was a little bit of movement there for Matthew Potts. England need to find a breakthrough in the 20-odd minutes that are remaining on day one.
It's a little quiet at Trent Bridge at the moment. England need to get the crowd going.
Unsurprisingly England have taken the new ball straight away.
Surprisingly, it is going to be Matthew Potts to get first go with it.
