  1. NZ 493-5published at 134.0 overs

James Anderson clocks up a maiden. Here's the best of the evening session so far - a pull from Michael Bracewell off a short ball from Matthew Potts.

  2. NZ 493-5published at 133.3 overs

One slip for James Anderson now. "This is a proper stalemate" remarks Daniel Norcross on Test Match Special. England skipper Ben Stokes happy to allow New Zealand to try to force the issue, by bowling tight lines with the field set back.

I'm surprised we've not seen more of this from England - trying something different. Jack Leach bowled a 14 over spell and didn't change a thing.

At least try coming around the wicket, or try and create a different angle.

  4. NZ 493-5published at 133.0 overs

Ben Stokes attempting to organise his field from the deep as Matthew Potts finishes with three dots. England have no slips in place, and are on the defence.

There's nothing quite like seeing the captain, who is an essential part of your bowling line up and with concerns over his workload, running over 100 yards between deliveries to get to different fielding positions.

  6. NZ 492-5published at 133.2 overs

Matthew Potts is 0-112 after Michael Bracewell flicks one off his hips for a single. A week is a long time in Test cricket, eh?

Fran Adam: England just don’t have that magical quick that break partnerships on flat wickets. Archer never did it and Wood doesn’t either. How England could do with a Cummins, a Bumrah, a Thakur etc.

  8. NZ 489-5published at 132.0 overs

Interesting point made on commentary by Jeremy Coney about Michael Bracewell having a lot of experience of facing the short ball due to a significant spell in Perth - notorious for its fast bouncy tracks - working with his uncle John Bracewell. Questionable approach peppering him with bouncers. Have England done their homework?

James Anderson, meanwhile, is attempting to draw Daryl Mitchell outside his off stump with a controlled line wide of off stump but he's resisted the bait so far.

New Zealand look like they are going to take it on. Daryl Mitchell likes the short ball, he won't mind this.

That was hit extremely hard. There are fielders out there but none of them could get close.

  11. NZ 488-5published at 130.4 overs

Change of end for Matthew Potts, then.

Potts' second ball is a short-ball to Michael Bracewell, but the Kiwi batter picks it up early, transfers his weight to the back foot, and pulls it between two England fielders on the boundary for four.

Two balls later and Potts goes short again but this time Bracewell finds the fielder.

  12. NZ 482-5published at 130.1 overs

That was perhaps a rare rush of blood to the head for Michael Bracewell, who looks a serious sort. He's nicely balanced at the crease and full of concentration.

    A maiden from James Anderson.

I don’t think England need to ‘produce’ a new fast bowler - we have an embarrassment of riches in that respect, we just need to get them fit. There’s so much quality in the likes of Robinson, Stone, Archer, Mahmood, Wood and Fisher. We've never been so spoilt on paper, it would just be nice to get them on the track. The focus must remain on the batting line up and a frontline spinner. Days like this happen in Test Cricket, but with a batting line up we can trust, they can be survived.

  14. NZ 482-5published at 129.2 overs

Matthew Potts replaced by James Anderson who is busy directing proceedings from the top of his mark, pointing here, there and everywhere like a traffic police officer at rush hour. Two slips in place for England's greatest-ever seam bowler.

His second ball sees a huge swing of the willow from the left-handed Michael Bracewell to one outside off stump, but the Kiwi batter fails to connect. The crowd are jolted into life.

England could get 500 plus as well and put pressure on New Zealand. It's unlikely ... but it could happen.

  16. NZ 482-5published at 129.0 overs

Joe Root, collar up, hair slightly ruffled like he's just seen a favourite uncle, into the attack.

Michael Bracewell flicks a single before Daryl Mitchell sees out the rest of the over without further troubling the scorers.

Tidy stuff from the former England skipper.

The runs are easier to get now than they will be later. They need to get as many as they can in this next hour.

Phillip Brooks: Test cricket gripe, why not take tea/lunch immediately when it rains if it’s within an hour of the scheduled time? Then you can start play immediately when it stops, rather than waiting another pointless 20 minutes.

  19. NZ 481-5published at 128.0 overs

Matthew Potts had four balls left from his over before the rain interruption.

His first is blocked stoically by Daryl Mitchell who then wafts a cut at a wide one second outside off stump. The Kiwi batter leaves the third and then blocks another.

Scheduled restart of play was 15:30 but England's players are still in their huddle on the boundary rope. They are getting daggers from umpire Paul Reiffel, full tea pot, hands on hips, who is fastidiously keen to get things going at the allotted time.
