Lot of criticism for Leach. Let's not forget he's had 2 dropped catches and umpire's calls that didn't go his way. Very different if one of those chances goes in his favour.

Almost! A lapse in concentration from Daryl Mitchell as he is lured in by Ben Stokes and nearly edges behind.

A frustrated Stokes looks as grumpy as Prince Louis at the Jubilee celebrations.

England should take Ben Stokes off because you don't want to overbowl him. They should maybe give Joe Root a go to the left-hander to change it up.

  4. NZ 479-5published at 126 overs

    Mitchell 161, Bracewell 40

Mitchell heaves Matthew Potts back down the ground. It's not really timed but does enough to bounce inside the ropes and trickle over.

Potts is wicketless and has conceded 104 from 25 overs. A stark difference from his Test debut.

You hear people saying now get out there and bowl, but New Zealand should just bat and bat. First innings runs are more valuable. England will have to contend with looking at 600 on the scoreboard and that will be daunting. I'd be reluctant to give anything anyway if I was in their position.

  6. NZ 472-5published at 125 overs

England's fast bowling coach Jon Lewis said yesterday it was the "right call" to win the toss and bowl first.

I wonder if he still feels the same.

I think 550 or even 600 is what New Zealand will be looking at. They need the runs to give themselves time to bowl England out twice. New Zealand want to get England to the position whereby they think they cannot win the game, that a draw is all that is on their mind and it affects their techniques. They should be looking to go as big as possible.

Potts bowls back of a length. It sits up nicely for Bracewell who carves it through backward point for four.

The England seamer nearly has his man as Bracewell almost plays on. An inside edge sends the ball fizzing past the leg stump and down to the fine-leg boundary.

    Nothing is going England's way.

A change in the bowling. England have decided not to persevere with Jack Leach. On comes Matthew Potts.

I could sense the genuine despair in your words there, Dave.

Mitchell unleashes a full-blooded drive through the off side for yet another boundary. He then plays and misses at a wide one from Stokes. I can't remember the last time he played a poor shot.

Dave Ross: Dear Brendon and Ben, we love you. You have huge credit in the bank but please, please follow your instincts and gamble some runs on some extreme pace and a wrist spinner. There are flat tracks all around the world that this attack will be found wanting on. Thank you.

    Mitchell 153, Bracewell 27

Jack Leach races through an over, conceding just a couple. This partnership is already worth 55.

What's the magic number for New Zealand? 550 and declare? The way they're going, we'll be there in a blink of an eye.

Michael Bracewell has played nicely on debut. I think Alex Lees and Zak Crawley have already started to wonder how many overs they will have to face today.

Gorgeous shot from Bracewell who drives Ben Stokes through the off side for four. From his positioning, to the timing and the placement - pure class.

The next shot is a streaky one as he edges wide of second slip for another boundary. They all count.

Stokes breathes heavily as he walks back. Jaw open - much like a fatigued boxer heading into the 12th round of a slugfest.

  15. NZ 447-5published at 120 overs

Leach continues but it's a much better over. Mitchell prods and pokes away the first few deliveries before taking a single.

Bracewell advances down the wicket to take one more.

Rick Harris: What is the point of bowling Leach into submission? It’s bad enough that he isn’t a Test standard spinner, but this battering of 110 runs+ is hardly going to help his confidence either. Bring him on when we eventually get to the tail. Such a dumb selection.

  17. NZ 447-5published at 119 overs

Mitchell tucks to mid-wicket and Bracewell sees off the remainder of Stokes' over with ease.

Will we now see a change in the bowling? Leach has gone for 24 in his last two overs.

Probably been already asked before - but what is the most expensive dropped catch in Test cricket?

Daryl Mitchell achieves the next milestone. What a tremendous innings which has included 18 fours and four sixes.
