That's just about your lot for this evening. A few bits of housekeeping before we bid you farewell.

"It's difficult to think of what England could have done differently given the situation they found themselves in at the beginning of the day," writes my colleague Stephan Shemilt and you can read his day two report here.

You can watch highlights from today's play on Today at the Test on the BBC Iplayer.

Lee Payne: I think I've seen more of Daryl Mitchell than I have my own family this month.

  3. 'Nice to get a score that might contribute to a win'published at 19:39 British Summer Time 11 June 2022

New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell on Test Match Special: "No mixed emotions - I'm not really bothered about the double. It was just nice to get a score that contributed to us getting a score that might win us the Test match. It was very rewarding to get the individual achievement but also to help the boys out.

"It's a nice surface - you saw the way England batted tonight, but for me it is just about going out and trusting my game and skills and hopefully that allows me to have some success. It's allows cool to get some scores and it's good fun.

"That is the wonder of Test cricket, when you get a few chances you have to make the most of it and you need some luck on your side and it was nice to get that.

"We created three chances tonight and we know if we keep putting the ball in the right spot time and time again we'll create some opportunities and you never know. Test cricket is a funny game and long game."

  4. 'Pope can get good score'published at 19:35 British Summer Time 11 June 2022

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

It's a great chance to go and get a big score. The first half hour is key. You have to go and get yourself back in. If he's still there at 11:30/11:45 I could see a good score from Ollie Pope.

  5. 'Pope has technique for No.3'published at 19:32 British Summer Time 11 June 2022

England batting coach Marcus Trescothick on Ollie Pope: "We're just trying to find the right balance for him. He's mainly batted at four for Surrey. There isn't a massively different approach - it is about getting in and understanding the pitch, conditions and their bowlers. He's got the temperament and technique to do it. It's great working with him, Alex Lees and Zak Crawley and trying to promote them and make them get better. It's a great project for me to get stuck into."

On Alex Lees: "He's a rock and very solid. He's fitting into the team really well. It's just about getting the balance right and giving these players time to grow their skill and grow into the Test arena."

The pitch is pure. The forecast is good tomorrow. England are only one wicket down. They're so far behind the game though that they know if they have a really bad session then this Test match turns on its head.

I get the sense that on this kind of wicket, if it continues to play like it has done today, England can bat out tomorrow. They shouldn't get bowled out on that kind of wicket in a day. That is a good Test match wicket. If they do get bowled out on a pitch like that tomorrow, they will have played some poor strokes.

  7. 'Dropped catches infectious'published at 19:26 British Summer Time 11 June 2022

England batting coach Marcus Trescothick on Test Match Special: "It was good to see the guys having a good time out there and scoring runs and getting us into a good position after a couple of tough days out there.

"We hope for a big first innings score. The odd occasion where they get the ball in the right area it does a little bit. You still have to work hard despite it feeling like a good pitch. You can be challenged if you don't concentrate. We have to come back tomorrow and do what we've done tonight."

On the dropped catches: "I have no idea - it seems to be infectious. You want to make the most of that and Daryl Mitchell did - there is no real explanation for it. It could be a concentration thing or a viewing thing."

  8. Postpublished at 19:20 British Summer Time 11 June 2022

England are 463 runs behind New Zealand's 553 all out with nine wickets in hand. The only one to fall this evening was that of Zak Crawley who got a snorter of a ball from Trent Boult in all fairness.

I was really pleased by the England pair there. Yes they've had an element of fortune each but you have to have a bit of luck sometimes in Test cricket. It's gone the way of Alex Lees. Daryl Mitchell was just tired from his batting or lost that element of concentration and it's given him a huge life. It was an easy one for a first grabber.

Ollie Pope was playing nice and then just jabbed at one from Trent Boult. I think it's a 'keepers catch. He should have gone for that.

  10. Postpublished at 19:14 British Summer Time 11 June 2022

There's a big opportunity for England's batters. This pitch is pure. It's a real good one for scoring runs. The outfield is very quick. A fast scoring ground. Not a great deal of swing or uneven bounce so far. We've yet to see anything from a spinner which will make you feel threatened.

Ollie Pope played some lovely shots on his way to fifty, and brought it up with his back foot cut off Kyle Jamieson.

New Zealand will feel they had opportunities and they couldn't quite nail them. They will feel disappointed by that.

  16. Eng 90-1 at stumpspublished at 19:07 British Summer Time 11 June 2022

Alex Lees faces a tricky yorker from Trent Boult in the penultimate ball of the day but he is able to safely squirm it to the leg side.

He does similar to the final ball of the day, picking up a single. A decent fightback from England - albeit riding their luck at times.

Michael: If Joe Root had caught Daryl Mitchell, New Zealand would have been 169-5... quite possibly 200 all out? Root owes England a quadruple century tomorrow.

That's Lees highest score in Test cricket. He has looked more the part in his last couple of Test innings.

  19. Eng 89-1published at 25.3 overs

Ollie Pope hasn't looked like someone who thinks it's the last over of the day. A risky-ish cut shot for no run, followed by a hook for a single to the boundary rider.

Alex Lees will be a little bit more dogged to these final three deliveries you suspect.

  20. Eng 88-1published at 25.0 overs

    Lees 33, Pope 50

Alex Lees digs out a yorker from Tim Southee's second ball and has repelled it well enough to get four runs straight down the ground. Four dots follow leaving Ollie Pope to face the final over the day.
