Bosh! Benjamin Stokes dances down and slogs Southee over mid-off for a one-bounce four. No messing about.
Root advances down to Tim Southee and plays an inside edge into a part of his thigh which isn't protected. He winces as he runs through for a single.

Ben Stokes sort of just placed that and as we've seen so often at Trent Bridge it just flew away.

Huge roars from the crowd as captain Stokes joins former skipper Joe Root.
Those cheers turn up a notch as Stokes gets off the mark with a back-foot punch through mid-wicket for four.

It is amazing. The front shot didn't look out at all and the depth perception utterly did me.
It is such a strange dismissal because nobody on the field knew.
It is a big wicket for New Zealand.
Bairstow c Blundell b Boult 8 (Eng 344-4)
Decision overturned! This has caught everyone by surprise. Jonny Bairstow included.
At first glance there appeared to be a gap between bat and ball. But there is a slight spike on UltraEdge as it passed Bairstow's glove.
England lose two quick wickets after the tea break. Flirting with dangerous territory.

It looks like he's missed it by an inch or so.
Eng 344-3
Bairstow is sliced in half by one which cuts back in. New Zealand think they may have heard a noise as it carried through to Blundell. Given not out. I'm not so sure but they go for the review.

He's hit that hard - he's nailed it. He's a strong guy, he's bulked up in the last couple of years. He's crunched that.

Jonny Bairstow likes them there!
Fun fact: Sir Alex Ferguson started managing United the day I was born. OK - it's not really fun. Just a fact.
TV replays confirm Bairstow's bat struck his pad. He did look backwards towards Tom Blundell behind the stump in a guilty manner, which is perhaps why the Kiwis behind him asked the question.
That's more like it. Bairstow clips a full delivery down to the square-leg boundary. Lovely shot. He then carves another four, this time through backward point. The runs keep on coming.

Jeremy, Somerset: England selectors doing to Ollie Pope what Man Utd did to Sir Alex Ferguson - stick by them, give them time and they will repay you back .....

Spare a little thought for Jonny Bairstow here - he's watched a brilliant partnership that has made batting look easy - and suddenly he's facing a fired up New Zealand, knowing how important the next 45 minutes are, with a new ball.
You can get a case of "poor me's" and feel sorry for yourself.

Jonny Bairstow is the new man in and ducks under a Boult bouncer, leaves the next few deliveries and then plays inside the line of one shaping away.
The slip cordon are interested but Boult is not. I think it was a case of bat on pad.
Still a fine pitch for Bairstow to also make some runs on. He has to contend with a ball which is only four overs old, though.

It is an amazing reception for Ollie Pope.
He has to sit down and be very proud of that innings because everyone was questioning why he was playing at three and he's responded.
Any doubts he's had about belonging at international level he's just shown in the last six hours or so that he absolutely belongs at international level.

First ball after changing his pads.
I wouldn't say Matt Henry judged it well but he fell forward and held onto it.
Trent Bridge rises to a very disappointed Ollie Pope. When he thinks about this innings he'll think about it a breakthrough one, but all batters are greedy and he wanted many many more.
Pope c Henry b Boult 145 (Eng 334-3)
The new pads are bad luck. Ollie Pope mistimes a pull shot. He top edges and Matt Henry, running in from the fine-leg boundary, takes a smart catch.
A terrific innings, Pope's highest Test score and second century, comes to an end.

I've never seen this before.

Will Ollie Pope want to change one pad or both pads here?
