Time for an outfit change. Pope, unnecessarily, dived to make ground when taking a single in the last over and appears to have damaged his pads.

The 12th man comes on with not just one fresh pair, but two. The choice is yours, Ollie.

Pope misses a straight one and is struck on the thigh. Southee and the slip fielders all go up. Not out - too high. A review would be out of complete desperation here. Latham wisely opts not to go upstairs.

Way to bring the mood down, Babyboomer.

Nice away swing from Tim Southee. Ollie Pope shoulders his arms and lets it go by. Trent Bridge is still rocking. The loudest it's been all Test, I reckon.

Babyboomer: While you can enjoy the various excellent displays of batting, a pitch without life and a ball equally as dead doesn't make for much of a watchable sporting contest. There has to be some element of a challenge in scoring 870 between them for the loss of 12 wickets.

New Zealand make their way back out, closely followed by England's two centurions... how good does that sound?

The sun's shining at Trent Bridge and so are England.

Should be a fascinating battle after the break with the new ball.

Pope would have learned so much from his innings so far. He's had to take a backseat in the last half hour or so, which is difficult when you've already scored 100. It's the maturity we need at number three.

    Exhibition stuff now.

Trent Boult is welcomed back into the attack by Root with a lovely clip through mid-wicket for four more. But Boult comes back with two great deliveries, just missing the edge.

And that's Tea. Excellent session for England with 136 runs coming between Pope and Root this afternoon. The Trent Bridge crowd clap the pair off. They've got their money's worth!

During Covid when everyone was locked down, Root got all his dismissals and had a look where he can get better.

He was going through the process. He did this thing where he batted 30 overs on the bowling machine. Have a break. Then bat 30 overs on the machine again so it can help his concentration and he can bat the whole day. That really helped his game.

That is why he's so good and what makes him a great, and probably our best ever, play. The way he trains is the most impressive thing.

Just 116 balls for that ton - the latest in his illustrious career.

My word, he makes it look effortless.

The Black Caps take the new ball. They need a breakthrough desperately.
