I don't think New Zealand have done their homework on Jimmy Anderson. He pretty much just sweeps. I think the reverse sweep isn't far away.

    Four!

James Anderson gets down and sweeps Michael Bracewell brilliantly for a one-bounce four over square leg.

    He connected with that.

I watched the highlights of Root's innings last night. Why does he always seem to have so, so much time? Because he seems, literally, to know exactly what each ball is going to be and where it will land before it is ever delivered. It truly is extraordinary.

    Trent Boult is so good.

He twice beats James Anderson's outside edge, before England's finest gets off the mark.

Boult then slides one past Jack Leach's edge.

    He has bowled beautifully.

Trent Bolt has really stuck at it. Clearly the pick of New Zealand's bowlers. A really good delivery. A swinging, full ball. It might have even dismissed a player better than Matthew Potts.

    Potts b Boult 3 (Eng 530-9)

Five for Trent Boult. This is happening quickly.

This is a lovely ball from Boult. It's full, swinging in, and it is too good for Matthew Potts - and a bit too quick - as the ball crashes into leg stump.

New Zealand lead by 23. They'll want this final wicket quickly so they hold a little lead.

It's an interesting day for Leach. There is something to work with on this fourth day surface. It's not massive but there's a bit of turn there.

Matthew Potts is up and running in Test cricket with a push down to mid-on.

This game is intriguingly poised, isn't it?

That's a bit of a shame for Foakes. He's been playing well. He always knew it was going to be a tight run. Potts made an initial run and Foakes over committed himself.

Disappointing for him. He's had two good innings against New Zealand and kept tidily. He's cementing his place in this side.

Foakes run out (Nicholls) 56 (Eng 527-8)

    Uh oh.

With Matthew Potts looking to score a first run in Test cricket he takes a couple of steps forward having worked the ball into square leg.

Ben Foakes sets off at the non-striker's end and keeps going, before realising that Potts has stopped and turned back.

Foakes was more than half-way down the pitch and has absolutely no chance of making it back as Henry Nicholls throws it Michael Bracewell who whips off the bails.

    England are just 26 behind.

There are some moody looking clouds lurking over Trent Bridge.

I'm surprised Stuart Broad walked for that one... our listeners will remember the one at Trent Bridge in the Ashes which upset Australia!

Matthew Potts - who got a two-ball duck in his first and only Test innings at Lord's - sees out his first two balls.

He's just got to support Ben Foakes here.

He is, supposedly, a much better batter than we saw at Lord's. He averages 16.55 in first-class cricket.

    Broad c Mitchell b Bracewell 8 (Eng 527-7)

Oh Daryl Mitchell, that's a grab.

Michael Bracewell lands one in the footholes and Stuart Broad can't resist going for the drive a healthy inside edge is plucked out the air by Mitchell at slip.

It's a stunning one-handed catch, high to his right.

England are still 26 behind. We could end up with pretty much a one-innings game here.

    Oh, nice.

Stuart Broad gets down and sweeps/dabs/defends round the corner - and holds the pose for good measure - for his second boundary.

England are chipping away at the deficit.

This is only the fourth time since December 2013 (Johnson's Ashes) that Stuart Broad has batted as high as number eight in a Test. Up to then, in the first six years of his career, Broad batted eight 38 times and seven three times.

Stuart Broad has been quite reserved so far, but he was swing, swing, swing at Lord's so maybe he's been encouraged to rein it in a little bit and support Ben Foakes.

The left-hander does pick up his first boundary though as he nudges a hip-height ball round the corner.
