  1. 'Stokes said you do you, I'll do me'published at 11:01 British Summer Time 13 June 2022

Root on Ben Stokes, who scored 46 off 33 balls: "[His innings] didn't take me by surprise. We have batted quite a bit together. The only thing he said to me was "you do you, I'll do me" - when he says something like that you just leave him to it. You see how destructive he can be. If he bats for two hours at any stage this summer and he's playing like that, you're in for a treat."

The players are out in the middle. It's a cloudy day in Nottingham but there is a little bit of blue sky peeking through.

It'll be Tim Southee to start with the ball.

Joe Root will be aiming for a sixth Test double century this morning but he'll need to be ably supported by Ben Foakes.

England's keeper had a scratchy start - overturning a caught behind and then being dropped on the square leg boundary - but he looked more fluent towards the close of play.

This is a chance for him to solidify that position.

  4. 'We're in a really good position'published at 10:57 British Summer Time 13 June 2022

More from Joe Root: "It just felt great fun. This last couple of weeks has been really good fun and it felt exactly like that yesterday. When you're bouncing off the guys at the other end it does make it that special. We just got into a rhythm yesterday. We knew what a good wicket it was and it was about going out there and close down that social. We still feel we're in a really good position."

  5. 'We know Pope is a great player'published at 10:56 British Summer Time 13 June 2022

England batter Joe Root, unbeaten on 163, speaking on TMS: "I was really excited to get out there. The guys played extremely well up until that point. Brilliant partnership. It was a nice wicket. Seeing the game unfold as it did. And it was a nice chance to get something together with Ollie.

"I thought he played beautifully. It was so good at the other end watching him go about his thing. It's been a long time coming in my eyes. You see the quality and hardwork he puts in. We all know what a great player he is. The joy from the rest of the group and myself seeing his face when he got to three figures was really special. That made it even more fun for myself out there."

We should be OK weather wise, but some cloud might work in England's favour as the day progresses.

  8. 'Focus on the batting and then early wickets'published at 10:46 British Summer Time 13 June 2022

Ollie Pope was also superb yesterday in making his second Test century. He went up and down the gears in brilliant fashion and showed us some of his hitting ability.

He's guaranteed the number three slot in his for this series and surely the first Test against South Africa in August.

Speaking at the close about the state of the game, Pope said: "We've got to focus on our batting [tomorrow]. Hopefully sneak in front of them or get as close as we can and hopefully put them under some pressure with early wickets."

Yesterday was an absolute cracker. England were just relentless throughout the whole day.

Have a watch of the highlights - it was a tough job squeezing them into five minutes!

  10. The game situationpublished at 10:38 British Summer Time 13 June 2022

After day two most of us expected England to either lose this game or it to peter out into a draw.

While the latter is still the overwhelming favourite the fact that England bludgeoned 383 runs on day three means that all three results are now possible (and also the tie, I suppose).

England will start day four on 473-5, which is 80 runs behind New Zealand. If the tourists wrap up England's innings quickly they could have a handy lead and be able to force the game from there - seeming they are 1-0 down in the series they need the win more.

There is a possibility that England, with Joe Root resuming on 163 and Ben Foakes on 24, could yet open up a lead. The pitch was still playing beautifully yesterday and the outfit was rapid.

    It should be fascinating.

    Morning!

Yesterday was a brilliant day of Test cricket, with who other than Joe Root leading the way for England once again.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan called Root a "genius" and said he was "England's greatest ever player".

Jonathan Agnew said Root's innings was "batting poetry", while England white-ball player Liam Livingstone said the Yorkshireman put "on a clinic".

We are witnessing greatness. Soak it in.
