It's gone calm.
Ben Foakes and Stuart Broad exchange singles off Tim Southee.
Some of the criticism around Foakes is that he's not as good at marshalling the tail as Jos Buttler for example. This is an opportunity for him to put that chatter to bed.
Here is that utterly ridiculous six from Joe Root.
I mean how?
It was only his second ball of the day. What a player.

Sam McCarthy: I mean, Joe Root. Wow, just wow. What an innings!

Stuart Broad blocks (I know, I can barely believe it either) out his first three balls.
It looks fairly gloomy at Trent Bridge. It might not be easy out there for a new batter.

This could be fun.
Oh, buckle up.
Shot-a-ball Stuart Broad has strolled out to the middle.

It had to end at some point unfortunately. What an innings. A genius. A genius at work. What a brilliant, brilliant innings. It was a pleasure to watch that.

A staggering innings. Joe Root's fastest century. He smashes the bat into the air. He's frustrated with himself as he walks off.
Root c Southee b Boult 176 (Eng 516-6)
Boooooo. I didn't want this to end.
Trent Boult offers Joe Root quite a lot of width and he can't resist going for the drive. But, he's reaching for the ball, and can't stay in control of the shot so offers up a little chip to Tim Southee in the covers.
The Trent Bridge crowd cheer "Roooooot" but he's fuming. He smashes the bat against his pads and looks very disappointed as he trudges off. He feels like he's left some runs out there.

Joe Root is like a magician. Waving his wand. Ordering the ball to go wherever he wants it to go.
Ben Foakes has played beautifully this morning.
He's answering any potential doubters.

Southee looks like he is going to combust.

Four more!
A gorgeous back-foot drive from Ben Foakes isn't able to be dragged back in by the New Zealand fielder and Ben Foakes is flying.
England have scored 43 runs in five overs. They've wiped out half of the deficit in 20 minutes. I'm running out of words.

Another little tick for the England management. Everyone has their opinion on who should keep for England. There are a number of high-quality wicketkeepers.

All the focus has been on Joe Root, of course. But how well has Ben Foakes played? He did at Lord's, too.
Ben Foakes is solidifying his Test spot.
With no fielders out on the off side Tim Southee offers him some width and Foakes guides a back-foot punch to the fence.
Poor bowling. Lovely shot. Gorgeous half-century.

This is a big risk. You see things differently from up here than when you're down there - but when you go bouncer warfare, you are risking runs. You can get a top edge or whatever. England, against this pace, are not going to duck. They're going to play.

Ben Foakes whips a couple through mid-wicket and that brings about a change in thought process from New Zealand.
They decide to go bouncer warfare and pack out the leg-side field. Foakes responds by crunching a pull to the square leg boundary. Take that.
That's the 100 partnership too. Unreal.

This the first time England have reached 500 in the second innings of a Test (replying to the opposition's score) since 2015. It's the first time they have done it at home since 2011.
