Ben Stokes was positioned there for something exactly like that.

He pointed up to the changing room immediately as if to say "someone has got that right".

It is another wicket frittered away by New Zealand.

Stuart Broad continues with the short ball approach and this time he has his man! Tom Blundell pulls it straight to Ben Stokes, who had positioned himself at an unorthodox backward square position.

The plan comes off for England. Just what the hosts, and this game, needed.

i thought it was a really good piece of fielding from Ollie Pope for the Will Young run out. Firstly because he had the awareness to wait and gather himself and work out which end, but secondly that also gives you a stronger base to throw from.

Jack Leach darts in a very wide delivery. Blundell stretches out and toe-ends it past slip for a single - ending a run of four maidens.

There are two places that are vulnerable in the England side at the moment.

Zak Crawley at the top of the order so Ben Compton of Kent will be looking at that and Jonny Bairstow at five, so both will be thinking they need some runs.

Bairstow has some credit in the bank from the runs he scored over the winter.

The players inwaiting just have to be ready when the call comes.

Magic spray, a drink, some encouraging words from the physio - Mitchell is good to continue.

Broad bangs it in short and Mitchell comfortably fences it away towards point.

    Yet another maiden.

I just wonder if it is worth giving Joe Root a bowl, something a little bit different.

It feels like we have just been watching Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell batting together for the last two weeks.

Jonny Bairstow signs an autograph for a grown man on the boundary.

Daryl Mitchell attempts a pull at a leg-side delivery as it goes through to Foakes behind the stumps.

Stuart Broad straightens his line, with the same short length, and Mitchell - once again going for the pull - is struck on the right arm.

He winces. On comes the physio.

Jack Leach just raced through an over and there is absolutely nothing to report. Six balls. All defended with ease by Tom Blundell.

Bill Bows: England really need to find a wicket taking spinner if this McCullum/Stokes revolution is going to transform us into world beaters again. Leach isn't it and he hasn't even got the control to tie up an end and keep the run rate down.

I haven't seen much of Stuart Broad pumping up the crowd today. Just the one from a quiet over.

It's looking quite dark in Nottingham but it should be clear enough to see us through until 18:30 BST.

    Thank you, Callum.

It's starting to become the Mitchell and Blundell show again. The duo have blunted England's charge. We have 16 overs, or an hour of cricket, left to play.

    Stuart Broad to continue.

A tidy maiden from Jack Leach.

Time for us to have a change. Kal Sajad will take you through the remainder of the day. Enjoy.

That hurt Ben Foakes. It really did wobble late. He was wringing his hand. He's kept beautifully all day.

    Ouch!

Stuart Broad gets one to wobble a little bit and it is nasty one for Ben Foakes to try and gather. So much so that it catches him on the top of the thumb and runs away for a couple of byes.

Foakes is struggling momentarily, as he stands there and shakes his hand in pain.

He's going to get it looked at in between overs.

    Four.

Jack Leach strays onto the pads of Tom Blundell, who adjusts well and flicks through mid-wicket.

Time for a drink. England have done reasonably well, in picking up two wickets, during that first period of play in the evening session. They'll want a fair few more tonight.

Leach hasn't got a lot of drift or guile today. That one was slightly more tossed up. It had that dip and drop. He's been a little bit flat for me today though.

He is wrong on this occasion though.

There's no murmur on Hawk-eye and Tom Blundell survives.

    Better from Jack Leach, though.
