Time for spin for the first time in this innings as debutant Michael Bracewell turns his arm for the first time.

Bracewell gives it plenty of flight. Bairstow and Lees both take easy singles.

If England weren't three down, they may be more inclined to target him.

It is still on for England, but it is still on for New Zealand. I would have New Zealand as slight favourites.

I am intrigued to see how England go about this. I just think it'll be about how they play the spinner because there are quite a few footholes.

Zak Crawley is the first England opener to be out twice in their first 10 balls in both innings of the Test since Sir Alastair Cook in the 2007 Test in Kandy.

Alex Lees had to be quite smart there to get back despite Tim Southee taking quite a lot of the pace off the ball.

  5. drinks break

    Eng 74-3published at 22 overs

Bairstow punches down the ground. Southee deflects onto the stumps but, fortunately, Lees is back in his crease at the bowler's end.

Time for drinks. The hosts are still in this but you feel it's crucial these two now build a solid partnership.

Have New Zealand artfully dangled the carrot in an inspired piece of captaincy?

Yesterday, we asked you to rank the best England innings of the last decade. Here's how you voted:

    • 1. Ben Stokes 135* v Australia, Headingley, 2019
    • 2. Kevin Pietersen 186 v India, Mumbai, 2012
    • 3. Kevin Pietersen 149* v South Africa, Headingley, 2012

    • 5. Sir Alastair Cook 263 v Pakistan, Abu Dhabi, 2015
    • 6. Joe Root 176 v New Zealand, Trent Bridge, 2022

  9. Eng 72-3published at 20 overs

    Target 299

Lees punished some poor Tim Southee bowling with three boundaries in the opening over of the England innings.

The seamer returns to the attack. This time Lees just tucks off his hips for a single.

Jonny Bairstow slashes hard to a wider delivery - play and a miss - before taking two from a push down to mid-off.

Alex Lees has really compact in the last three innings. He stands really still.

He is starting to look like a Test opener. I have been really impressed in the last two or three innings.

  11. Eng 69-3published at 19 overs

    Lees 35, Bairstow 8

Shot. Pitched up by Matt Henry and Alex Lees plays the sweetest of straight drives. Having scored 67 in the first innings, the opportunity is there for the opener to completely hush the naysayers with a match-winning innings.

That is Joe Root's lowest score in a home Test since the 2019 Ashes Test at Old Trafford, where he got a first-ball duck. It is his 15th home Test since then.

Robin Johnson: Don’t want to tempt fate, but that gap between YJB’s bat and pad is huge.

  14. Eng 68-3published at 18 overs

    Eng need 235 runs

Nothing ugly about that. Bairstow creams it through through the gap by mid-off. Gorgeous shot. Four.

  15. Eng 60-3published at 17.2 overs

Jonny, Jonny, Jonny. He chases at a wide one and ends with one just one hand on the bat. He's not reluctant in going for it. But it's looking a bit ugly at times.

New Zealand have bowled really well after lunch - they have been right on it.

  17. Eng 60-3published at 17 overs

Ben Stokes - padded up - watches on from the balcony with his game face on.

Bairstow latches onto some width and punches through cover for a couple. It's hit well by the Yorkshireman but half stopped by cover, saving two runs for New Zealand.

An inside edge, this time deflected into the pads, gets some of the Kiwis excited. Bairstow needs some runs, and today would be the absolute perfect time for it.

How do those two key wickets falling affect Alex Lees?

  20. Eng 57-3published at 16 overs

    Target 299

Yet another wicket for Boult, that. His seventh of the game. Jonny Bairstow the new man in. He's off the mark with a streaky single off the inside edge.

England still have Ben Stokes to come. But they also have a very long tail. But you know that this new-look England will still be giving it a go.
