    Target 299

Pope works a single off his pads before Alex Lees digs out a yorker. There's the quiet over I was after.

The opener takes off his gloves and rescues a ladybird which has placed itself in front of the crease. England's very own Dr Dolittle.

I was hoping for a nice, quiet over to settle into the live texting chair. Matt Henry to bowl the second over after lunch.

Jim Clarke: Is today the day that not-so-young Johnny Bairstow shows us why he's in this team? I really hope so.

    Target 299

Pope was not expecting such a fine delivery first up. And Latham was certainly not expecting a chance so early after lunch. How costly will that be?

Another boundary for England. A bit of a freebie from Trent Boult. Down the leg side and it races down for four byes.

That's a life, for sure. It's that scrambled seam - which did for Crawley too - takes the ball away and it takes the outside edge.

    Eng 37-1

My word! Pope edges the first delivery and captain Tom Latham, at second slip, spills it low down to his right. It should have been taken. A huge lifeline for England!

England need 264 runs from a minimum of 63 overs. Ollie Pope is on strike. Trent Boult is bowling. Here we go.

Lees has transformed himself from that first innings at Lord's, where he was operating in singles. It's been stand and deliver. This is now an extended one-day game.

Thanks, Ffion. A short but sweet stint.

Time now for the penultimate session of what has been an enthralling Test. We still have no idea where this game is going. Don't go anywhere.

    Plenty to think about there.

Anyway, that's my brief stint done and back to the actual cricket. Here's Kal Sajad, reinvigorated by his lunch break to take you through the afternoon session.

There are some unique circumstances surrounding England's most recent two captains in Alastair Cook and Joe Root, in that they were picked for England at such a young age - and rightly so, you can't say that was a bad thing.

But it meant they didn't get a chance to captain in county cricket. Whereas Andrew Strauss, who came before, started a little older and had captained Middlesex for some while.

England are in a habit of picking some very young batsmen. But I think listening to Alex Lees speak, he speaks with real maturity.

I'm not naming him as a future England captain but he has got in the team later, he has captained before and has led England Lions too.

He comes with a difference to someone like Zak Crawley or Ollie Pope.

Dean Wilson (The Mirror): "From my experience of Ben, he won't have any doubts about being an inexperienced captain.

"As far as he's concerned, he's played a lot of Test cricket, he understands the game and has plenty of ideas.

"At the end of the game, if England don't win, we might just ask him about that over that went for 14 off him and he'll just back himself and say he'd do it again.

"The job of a county captain is so different to an England captain. A county captain almost manages the club and has a lot of responsibilities off the pitch.

"It would be interesting to find a way for young county captains to just do the job on the field, just get that match practice and that would be really helpful going forward."

From the way that we've observed Ben Stokes away from the field, when he turned up at Lord's before his first game as captain, he looks perfectly at home with it and his messages have been backed up by the performances.

He is learning on the job, so I wouldn't worry too much about that session this morning with the short-ball stuff to the tailenders because we've seen plenty of England captains try that and get it wrong.

  14. "Root might have just taken one for the team"published at 13:29 British Summer Time 14 June 2022

Ali Martin (The Guardian): "Joe Root was really feeling the captaincy at the time. I wonder whether, either subconsciously or deliberately, he held on to the captaincy in the Caribbean for one last tour to protect Ben Stokes.

"Stokes was not ready to be Test captain at the end of that tour. Root might have just taken one for the team to give Stokes a bit more time.

"It allowed Stokes to play in the Caribbean and find some form and be a bit more ready.

"It became a burden and affected Root so much because they were losing. If England had won in the Caribbean without Broad and Anderson and won 2-0, I think he'd still be captain."

Dean Wilson (The Mirror): "It's different when you lose a T20 or a one-day game having a dart or going for it, because you just go on to the next game. You move on quickly.

"But if you put five days of effort and graft and the mental effort of Test cricket - there is going to have to be a balance. The reward of blocking a draw or surviving for a draw, that's still satisfying in Test cricket and it's going to be quite revealing how they balance that.

"The public will enjoy the vibrancy we're seeing now, but if a team is going to keep thrashing and losing, I don't think it will stick."

  16. "McCullum made England trendy again"published at 13:22 British Summer Time 14 June 2022

    Stephan Shemilt
BBC Sport's chief cricket writer at Trent Bridge

It was hard work watching England play cricket in the last 18 months. But McCullum made the team trendy again.

Not just because he's the only England coach to rock up to Lord's with jeans above the ankles but straight away, everything that McCullum and Stokes have said, they've backed it up.

McCullum said that the way England play cricket isn't just good for England, it's good for Test cricket around the world and we're seeing that today.

There were question marks over Ollie Pope and Ben Foakes but Stokes said no, I want them in my team and they're repaying that faith.

There have been a couple of moments where it could've all come crashing down. There will be times they fail spectacularly. But that's just going to be part of the ride.

  17. "A fresh lease of life in the dressing room"published at 13:17 British Summer Time 14 June 2022

Ali Martin (The Guardian): "It was a grim winter for England. There was a lot of talk about progress and resets and team unity in the Caribbean but you can really sense a fresh lease of life in the dressing room now.

"You can attribute some of that to McCullum and Ben Stokes. Some people will be saying is that a psychological battle but when you see someone like Alex Lees playing like he is now, it's hard not to make a connection. When he made his Test debut in the West Indies he looked cagey, he played within himself but now he's taken on his game in this new era, playing much more positively."

England eventually dismissed New Zealand for 284, leaving England a target of 299 to win.

And they started quickly, despite losing Zak Crawley early for a duck. Alex Lees is unbeaten on 30 from 35 balls and Ollie Pope has six.
