Joe Root was crucial to England's chances just because of the tempo that he plays at. We've said all morning that Trent Boult is the most likely for New Zealand. Well bowled.
Do England's chances just go with that? I don't know.

New Zealand have got a big breakthrough! That is a bonus for the Kiwis.
It just held in the pitch and it is an excellent reflex catch.
Root c & b Boult 3 (Eng 56-3)
A huge blow for the hosts!! Joe Root has been dismissed in the tamest of ways.
Trent Boult gets it to just hold back in the pitch a little and Root chips it back towards the bowler. Boult keeps his composure to take a smart catch on the follow through.
What a huge, huge wicket. A game-changer, perhaps.

Joe Root will just look to wrestle momentum back, and it is just with him running. He is going to run them ragged and won't let them bowl dots at him.
He just puts the bowling side on the back foot.

The crowd just love Joe Root here at Trent Bridge. They absolutely love him.
Enter Joe Root. This is probably where the game will be won or lost (or drawn) for England.
And Root is on it straight away. He runs like his life depends on it and is off the mark with three down to deep mid-wicket.

It is a belter. It is so difficult to play the seaming delivery at that pace when it is so full.

It is a lovely delivery, angled into the off-stump and Ollie Pope came forward and Tom Blundell did the rest.
Pope c Blundell b Henry 18 (Eng 53-2)
Ollie Pope has fallen victim to a belting delivery by Matt Henry.
Just the slightest bit of movement off the seam and Pope edges into Tom Blundell's gloves. A terrific delivery.
The mission is now just that little bit harder for England.

England don't have to go hell for leather, picking up singles and twos and not losing wickets.
They just need to keep ticking away, there is still plenty of time left in the game.

To Jim Clarke 13:47: Hope so but I very much doubt it. Same could be said for Crawley at opener. He'd be best coming in five and giving Compton a run.

Ollie Pope is a bag of energy but he has to remember who he's running with too!
Target 299
The last thing England want here is a run out! Pope dabs into the off side and sets off. He takes a good three or four paces down the track before being sent back by Lees.
A bit too eager there.

Ollie Pope! That was sublime, playing it late.
Terrific shot from Ollie Pope. He hangs back in his crease and steers it down to the third-man boundary. He was in complete control of that shot.
Eng need 251 runs
Nope. There's every chance we'd already have a result by now if those catches were taken.
Eek. A play and a miss from Lees who fishes outside the off stump.
Decent over from Henry. Tight line and good length.

Would this match have been as entertaining if all those dropped chances had been held onto?
David, Newcastle upon Tyne
Target 299
Ollie Pope pushes into the off side and the England pair sprint two runs. Pope is eager for a second but Alex Lees, wisely, turns it down.
That allows Pope to keep the strike, get up on his toes and chop a back-of-a-length delivery past point for four.

Mark Burt: At times the catching in this match from both sides has been nothing short of embarrassing. Maybe it’s just me, but the quality of close fielding seems to be regressing.
