Re the Overtons and the cap presentation, reminiscent of when Steve Waugh was asked to inform brother Mark that he had been chosen to make his Test debut for Australia. "Great," said Mark. "Who’s the poor sap they’ve dropped to make way for me?" "Me" came the reply from Steve.

Another tight line and length from Matthew Potts. A really disciplined start, just the one run off his fourth over.

England have had the better of the opening half hour. They've probed on off stump consistently and New Zealand just look as if they're still trying to find their feet.

Kane Williamson has only played four Tests in the last 18 months before this one, but he's only scored one half-century in that time. That was against India in the World Test Championship final last year.

In his previous 50 Tests before that, he was averaging 67 with the bat with 18 centuries and 19 half-centuries.

  5. NZ 18-1published at 7 overs

A watchful Kane Williamson sees out the rest of the over.

England put a man out on the pull but it was a ploy as Stuart Broad went full and wide instead. Williamson wasn't having any of it.

    Shy at the stumps....but safe!

Will Young nudges it straight to Matthew Potts at mid-on and goes for a risky single.

Potts misses with his throw - but I think Young was gone with a direct hit there.

Here is the first wicket to fall, Tom Latham edging through to Joe Root at first slip in the opening over of the match.

There's just a hint of swing from Potts but it's not been particularly threatening. England have got to make good use of the new ball, and they've started well.

  9. NZ 14-1published at 6 overs

Ooh, swing and a miss from Kane Williamson as he flashes at a widish Matthew Potts delivery outside the off-stump.

Potts removed the Black Caps skipper twice at Lord's don't forget.

Stuart Broad goes a touch full again to tempt Will Young into the drive. He doesn't quite time the shot but the ball squirts into the onside for two.

It looks a flat pitch so New Zealand will hope things will get easier after they negotiate the first hour. But how much damage can England inflict in that time?

Vic Marks - all is fair in love and "twin fare". My twin threw a knife at me when we were 10. Fair to say I preferred being on his team at all times, regardless of the sport.

    Shot.

Will Young given a touch of width by Matthew Potts and he takes full advantage, cutting the ball through point for four.

Potts the bangs one in short to prompt a wild pull from Will Young but he was through the shot way too early and Ben Foakes claims behind the stumps.

    Rachel T: He’s big, he’s bad, he’s about to be a Dad……STUART BROAD!

  15. NZ 6-1published at 3 overs

Oof. Another fine delivery from Stuart Broad to end the over as gets one to nip off the seam and beat the edge of Kane Williamson's bat.

Broad cannot believe Williamson didn't get anything on that.

  16. NZ 6-1published at 2.1 overs

More oohs and ahhs as Kane Williamson flicks a Stuart Broad delivery off his glove and the ball disappears down leg just beyond the diving glove of Ben Foakes for a fortuitous four.

That's a very good over from Matthew Potts. The ball won't do much in the air today so it's important to maintain that consistent line and length.

  18. NZ 2-1published at 2 overs

Will Young gets New Zealand off the mark with a nudge off his thigh into the onside for two.

Matthew Potts responds with another fullish, fizzing delivery that beats the outside edge.

A great line first up from Potts and a great start from England.

There are still a fair few empty seats at Headingley. Transport issues are a factor I guess but surely after two Tests people now know not to miss a ball of this 'new England'?

Oooh what a delivery first up from Matthew Potts as he beats the outside edge of Will Young's bat.

    England buzzing at the moment.
