Round the wicket, scrambled seam, held a good line and length. It didn't seem to nip or anything, it's just that awkward channel for an opening batter early in their innings.

An early wicket is always what you need on a hot day on a flat pitch.

Broad is delighted. There's a spring in his step now that wasn't there half an hour ago, and that's what a wicket can do!

    He won't be grouchy now!

Stuart Broad looks to tempt Tom Latham outside his off-stump and he bites, sending a thin edge through to a delighted Joe Root at first slip.

    What a start for England.

Stuart Broad might be a bit grouchy. He'd have liked to have his feet up today!

Congratulations to him and his fiance Mollie, who announced yesterday they are expecting their first child together.

A watchful Tom Latham lets Stuart Broad's first delivery fizz past him without playing a shot.

A member of the ground staff then sprints onto the field to drop off one of the bowler's markers.

He showed a decent turn of pace there to be fair.

The national anthems were belted out with gusto. The stands are packed and the sun is beating down at a glorious Headingley.

Tom Latham and Will Young will open for New Zealand. Stuart Broad has the ball in hand for England from the Kirkstall Lane End.

    Let's go...

New Zealand have had a bad few months. They will not want to lose four Tests in a row.

The pitch does look very dry. I wonder if they thought about playing Ajaz Patel, the spinner. They are relying a lot on Tim Southee and Trent Boult and that doesn't always work very well for them.

They do a brilliant job but they end up fatigued.

As the teams take to the field for the national anthems, here is a rundown of the two sides:

England: Alex Lees, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes, Ben Foakes, Matthew Potts, Jamie Overton, Jack Leach, Stuart Broad.

New Zealand: Tom Latham, Will Young, Kane Williamson, Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Tom Blundell, Michael Bracewell, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, Trent Boult.

I was at Taunton last week for an epic 20 minutes watching Jamie Overton tear in and fell his twin brother Craig.

I have no idea how it feels to be a twin but you must feel something when you knock your twin brother out! He had a quick look at him and went straight back to his mark and let everyone else deal with it.

It was very dramatic. I was thinking if he keeps bowling like this he will be playing for England and look what's happened.

BBC weather presenter Simon King on BBC Test Match Special: "There will be lots of sunshine this morning but the cloud will creep over this afternoon.

"There is a fairly small risk of a shower moving through. But it's very hit and miss. It should stay largely dry, it's going to be very humid and very warm which may play a part.

"Tomorrow is much cooler, sunny spells in the morning and again a risk of some showers in the afternoon. The weekend is looking largely dry."

Last November Yorkshire were initially suspended from holding international matches over allegations of historical racism.

Their fixtures were restored in February after "clearly demonstrating" to the England and Wales Cricket Board that it "can meet the standards expected".

Last week the ECB charged Yorkshire and a number of individuals in relation to allegations of racism following its own investigation.

The new ball might do a little bit in the first half an hour but it looks like a belter of a pitch.

I am looking forward to how Jamie Overton goes. He is quick, he hits the pitch hard and that will suit him well in international cricket because he can bowl at 100% for shorter, sharper bursts.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson: "The sun is out but the pitch was quite a challenging one to read. We want to make first use of the surface.

"I did watch that final session [at Trent Bridge]. It was an incredible day's cricket, obviously not in our favour but we've got to try and build on the good things we did.

"Neil Wagner comes in for Kyle Jamieson and Matt Henry misses out. We've got five seamers to choose from that all bring something different to the attack so it's about weighing up those options as best as you can.

"We've played two great games of cricket and we don't want to take anything away from England because they played outstandingly well to get over the line and that's the beauty of the game. We did a lot of things well and it's about building on that."
