Mark Burt: Great day’s Test cricket. Bit in the deck, runs if you apply yourself. No quarter offered, no quarter given. Fantastic stuff!

George Gray: Feels more like England vs Mitchell and Blundell this series. Quality from both batters.

  2. NZ 217-5published at 86 overs

If you're wondering how close England seem to taking a wicket right now, well, the TMS team are currently discussing UFOs.

Zak Crawley and Joe Root clap their hands in unison as Matthew Potts concedes just one from the overs, with Blundell and Mitchell content in poking and prodding away.

I can't recall too many play and misses or ones that have fizzed past the outside edge today.

Mark Nixon: Mitchell batting on this tour has Dravid, Haddin and Hussey vibes. Get him, get the team.

  4. NZ 216-5published at 85 overs

He may not be bowling but Stokes isn't too far away from finding the breakthrough.

Mitchell dabs to mid-off. The England skipper picks up cleanly and throws at the non-striker's end, narrowly missing the stumps. I think Mitchell would have been just home.

This partnership is now worth 93 runs. England have five more overs to find the breakthrough.

Ls in team names? (John, Pinner - 5.32) - I make that 18-5 to NZ. That's one 'L' of a team!

    Mark, Bromley

  6. NZ 215-5published at 84 overs

Matthew Potts not getting as much as he'd hope out of this new ball as Tom Blundell easily navigates his way through a maiden over.

Ben Stokes was ill in the build-up to this Test, perhaps why he's not brought himself on to bowl today.

    Andy Zaltzman
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

Mitchell and Blundell have added 581 runs in this series. That is the most a pair of batters have added in the first three Tests of a series against England.

Another really gutsy fightback from this pair Mitchell and Blundell, who have done it all series.

  9. NZ 215-5published at 83 overs

Dad-to-be Stuart Broad is back into the attack and is appealing for an lbw with his first delivery; a straight one which hits Daryl Mitchell high on the pads.

Mitchell then unconvincingly chips one towards mid-off for two, before an inside edge into the leg side for one more.

Blundell pushes into the leg side for a single to end the over. Decent enough from Broad but Mitchell and Blundell are not budging.

Sanjay Murthy: Things could go a lot quicker if New Zealand just opened with Mitchell and Blundell.

  11. NZ 211-5published at 82 overs

Matthew Potts returns to the attack. He was very unfortunate not to pick up a wicket earlier after Ben Stokes did not review an lbw shout which would have sent Daryl Mitchell packing.

Blundell controls a rising delivery, elegantly punching it through point for four.

I think England would have taken being where they are now when they lost the toss. New Zealand 5 wickets down and a new ball to see out the day.

Ben Stokes keeps his faith with Jamie Overton.

The seamers bowls a full toss which dips as it passes Mitchell. The batter loses sight of the delivery and the ball narrowly misses leg stump. It beats Ben Foakes behind the stumps and races to the boundary.

  14. new ball

New ball takenpublished at 17:58 British Summer Time 23 June 2022

England take the new ball, with a lot of hope weighing heavily on it.

Play can go on until 18:55 BST, as long as there is no more rain or bad light doesn't come into play.

This is a good recovery from New Zealand. It's Mitchell and Blundell, what do you expect?

  16. NZ 203-5published at 80 overs

After Henry Nicholl's strange dismissal, here's another thing I have never seen before!

Jonny Bairstow has found a fairly large spikey peg - which was used to pin down the covers during the rain delay - on the outfield. He picks it up and jogs to the boundary to dispose of it.

Jamie Overton has done OK. He's clearly a whole-hearted trier. He bowls quick enough, I don't think he is rapid, but you can see why he's had success in the county game.

He gets a bit of movement every now and then and can get the ball to swing away from the right-hander, which is always a good sign.

  18. NZ 203-5published at 79 overs

Shane, if there is one thing we have learned from this series and the Brendon McCullum-Ben Stokes era, it's not to make any bold predictions on day one.

Short and into Daryl Mitchell's body, who pulls it well and to the right of the fielder at wide third man. The 200 is up for New Zealand.

Shane O'Neill: Those two shocking lbw decisions have now cost England 70 runs and counting, two wickets, two reviews, and probably the match.

  20. NZ 197-5published at 78 overs

I took a sip of my water. A slice of my orange. Look up and Jack Leach has finished his over.

Nothing to report. Who will come out on top by the end of day one? So much will depend on the new ball, which is just two overs way.
