  1. NZ 142-5published at 61 overs

Mitchell clips to the leg side. Matthew Potts, fielding at mid-on, has a shy at the stumps but the batter would have been safe.

New Zealand pick up four easy runs from the over.

England are just hurrying it along now to get through to the second new ball,

The seamers have all been excellent today, they haven't offered much to New Zealand.

  3. NZ 138-5published at 60 overs

Jack Leach floats in a full, straight delivery which Mitchell inside edges into his boot. England, optimistically but without any conviction, ask the question. Not out.

  5. NZ 136-5published at 59 overs

England are racing through the overs post-tea as Root continues. The Yorkshireman drifts one in which fizzes past Michell's outside edge.

Steve Dean was 99 at Lord's for Staffs in a Minor Counties final when he hit the ball against the umpire's foot and was out caught!

    Paul Fisher

Playing in the Bradford League a few years ago, I was the non striker, I took a drive full on in the chest and it looped up for a caught and bowled. The batter gave me a few choice words!

  7. NZ 135-5published at 58 overs

Ollie Pope fields at silly point. He's so close he can probably smell what Tom Blundell had for tea from the New Zealander's breath.

Another tight over from England spinner. He was inconsistent at Trent Bridge, especially with his length, but has been significantly better today, albeit on a pitch which has offered more turn.

  8. NZ 133-5published at 57 overs

    Blundell 6, Mitchell 29

Spin from both ends as Joe Root continues. His first delivery is a full toss which is easily clipped by Mitchell for four. A freebie.

The Kiwi takes two more with a glance down to fine leg. And again. Eight from the over.

We're 57 overs in today and the skipper is yet to bring himself on.

After a day played under bright blue skies, some dark clouds have now built behind the Football Stand End…

    Just one from the over.

One of the great things about that dismissal was a wide-eyed Ben Stokes repeatedly telling Jack Leach "that's out".

David Christian Rose: Look we've all done it - bored at the non-strikers end watching our team-mate score at a strike rate of 19. The run out would have been simpler, but why not deflect a catch to mid-off instead?

The players are back in the middle. Jack Leach still has four deliveries remaining.

New Zealand's in-form man Daryl Mitchell is still out there, unbeaten on 26.

Up until Nicholl's dismissal, the most exciting thing to happen in the session session was Jamie Overton, the debutant from Devon, took his first Test wicket by dismissing Devon Conway for 26.

After that extraordinary Henry Nicholls dismissal here is what the MMC Laws of Cricket has to say - law 33.2.2.3 to be precise - which states that a catch will be fair if:

"A fielder catches the ball after it has touched the wicket, an umpire, another fielder, a runner or the other batter."

Jamie Raynor: Cricket is remarkable. How do you even begin to explain that wicket to someone who doesn’t follow the game? Lovely bit of bizarre just before tea.

Out the back of the TMS box Sir Alastair Cook has just impressively recalled an occasion when a dismissal like that happened before.

He says Andrew Symonds was caught via a deflection off Michael Clarke's bat in an ODI between Australia and Sri Lanka in 2006.

Cookie is right - I've Googled it - and he's not happy we all doubted him at first.
