John Holder: "No. That would be a dead ball."

New Zealand upped their intensity towards the end of the session. Tim Southee is unbeaten on 33 from 27 balls.

Richard Mills in Manchester: "The wicketkeeper decides to take up a position at the vacant first slip. He's in full gear, including gloves. Is it within the laws for the wicketkeeper to take up any position on the field?"

John Holder: "The place for the wicketkeeper is behind the stumps. He can keep his gear on and go field anywhere as a fielder. You don't have to have a wicket-keeper. But he can only catch with the gloves if you're behind the stumps. If he goes in any other position, not behind the stumps, and catches with his gloves, it's a penalty."

England did finally hold on to one, however, when birthday boy Stuart Broad had Bracewell caught at slip for 13.

Keith: "A player with a luxurious beard dives to take a catch. It's unclear if it's a clear catch. TV replays show that while the beard was grounded, the ball was lodged in it. Is it out?

John Holder: "Yes. The beard is part of his person. So he's out."

England have had their chances, though. Mitchell was dropped by wicketkeeper Ben Foakes when on 80.

While Michael Bracewell was given a lifeline when Jonny Bairstow spilled this chance,

Larry from Leeds: "The bowlers bowls very wide. Directly into the leg of the short leg fielder. The ball bounces back onto the strip. The batsman steps forward and whacks it to the boundary. Does the four stand?"

John Holder: "If you bowl the ball off the pitch, it's a dead ball. So it will be given a no-ball. And it hasn't passed the batsman so it can't be wide."

Run machine Daryl Mitchell is scoring tons for fun. He reached three figures – his third century in three Tests – in style by launching Jack Leach for six.

Leach finally dismissed Mitchell for 109 on the stroke of lunch. A much-needed wicket for England.

New Zealand started the day on 225-5 and it didn't take long for Tom Blundell to convert his overnight 45 not out into a half-century.

We’ve seen some bizarre things in this Test, such as Henry Nicholls' dismissal yesterday, and you can add Blundell’s dismissal to the list.

He was given out lbw to Matthew Potts for 55 but unable to review with the decision review system not working.

I agree. England desperately needed that wicket, but it's clearly been New Zealand's session. Once again, they have Mr Mitchell to thank. A terrific innings.
