  1. NZ 40-1published at 11 overs

    Lead by 9

Tom Latham takes a single off the first ball to bring Kane Williamson on strike and the New Zealand skipper plays out the rest of the over, a watchful start from Williamson so far.

The weather seems to be on the turn at Headingley, it's looking pretty chilly and increasingly windy out there.

There is some wet weather in the distance too, though the radar suggests we might get lucky and it will skirt around the ground.

    Fingers crossed.

  2. NZ 39-1published at 10 overs

Matthew Potts troubles Tom Latham again as he gets the ball to nip back and cannon of his gloves and then pads.

That's better from Latham though, he plays a beautifully timed drive straight down the ground for four.

    Textbook.

Stuart Broad's bowled slightly too full after the lunch break. If he can bring his length back ever so slightly he can no doubt be more successful. Potts has been outstanding.

  4. NZ 35-1published at 9 overs

Tom Latham, who was out for a duck first innings, is looking in good touch as he moves on to 26.

Kane Williamson, who has struggled this series, is the new batter at the other end.

There is an expectant buzz around Headingley.

  5. NZ 32-1published at 8.1 overs

    Lead by 1

    Shot.

Tom Latham plays a lovely drive through mid-wicket for four to nudge New Zealand into the lead.

He has gone to drive through the covers and that was a thick outside edge. Potts has been so impressive throughout this Test match.

    Young c Pope b Potts 8 (NZ 28-1)

    He goes this time though!

Matthew Potts tempts Will Young into the drive but he can only send a thickish edge through to Ollie Pope at third slip.

  9. NZ 28-0published at 7.3 overs

    Oooh, unlucky from Matthew Potts.

He squares Will Young up and finds the edge, but it lands safely and flies through the vacant third slip area for another boundary.

    Soft hands saved Young there.

New Zealand have done quite well to settle things down. It would have been quite easy to lose a couple of early wickets. They're not that far behind and England have got to bat last on a dry pitch.

  11. NZ 21-0published at 7 overs

Tom Latham pushes off the back foot into the offside for three to bring Will Young on strike, who has yet to score this innings.

Broad then goes full and tempts Young into the drive, but doesn't snare the edge.

Relief for the Black Caps opener with the final ball though, as a miss-field at point sees the ball squirt through for four to get him off the mark.

Our new style is great and will get the most out of our best players, but... we got a lead after bowling more overs. Our bowlers have only had one full session of rest between innings. Having a spinner bowl the most overs in the first innings was very astute and will probably be the new normal.

Tom Latham gets a single off the pads to bring Will Young on strike. He sees out a tidy first over from Matthew Potts, who bowled excellently in the first innings.

That has nipped back quite significantly.

Ooh, Tom Latham got in a muddle there as he looked to leave Matthew Potts' first ball, but it nipped back quite severely and struck him on the gloves before bouncing safely.

Some early encouragement for the England bowlers.

Andy Purchase: Has there been a three match series with a lower aggregate of first innings leads than the 54 runs this series has produced? England 9 at Lord's, New Zealand 14 at Trent Bridge and England 31 in this match.

I don't think England have a choice but to play this new style of Test cricket. They don't have opening batsmen who can reliably keep the singles ticking over until the bowlers are tired. What they do have is a huge selection of world-class ODI batsmen. Why wouldn't you use that?
