Isaac: What irks me is that Test cricket can still be entertaining when not played at such a frenetic pace. Some people have seemingly forgotten that. Still, the game has and continues to evolve.

Stuart Broad ties a knot in his bandana. Runs his hands through those luscious locks.

    Tom Latham on strike.

    More work for Jonny Bairstow…

England say Ben Foakes has a stiff back so Bairstow will keep wicket.

What a fantastic knock by Jonny. In my opinion it's his best Test innings to date.

He looked in control. He was calm. We were 50-odd for six - when your team needed him he stepped up. He's that sort of character.

We've just shown you Jamie Overton being dismissed for 97. So it's only fair we show you just how brilliant his knock was.

John Traynor: England bowled out in sixty seven overs on a flat pitch. Only two batters lasted more than forty minutes. A lot of work to do.

Ultimately, a quality Test batting performance has to be one played with intelligence. Knowing when to go with the gut and defend, to bore the fielding side essentially and then when to strike out and apply personality, play the shots, punish the opponent and entertain the crowd. It's what Australia used to be so good at, and this England side certainly have the right qualities to do it too. Brains, bravery and brawn.

New Zealand will have a tricky 20 or so minutes to contend with before lunch. Can England sneak a wicket? Or two? Or more?

Jonny Bairstow must be floating on air at the moment. He is in one of those periods in your career where everything seems in slow motion. A real purple patch, everything is working, you are not even thinking about it and you are just going out and enjoying the game.

Ant S: This isn't necessarily a new approach. Test cricket always been about building a base (Lees, Root, Pope etc) that allows the bruisers (Stokes, Bairstow etc) to come in and punish tired bowlers. The difference with this test is the lack of foundation from top order...

Leach lbw Southee (Eng 360 all out)

Three reds. Hitting the top of middle. It was a straight delivery but one which you'd expect a number 11 to struggle with.

So that's that. England finish on 360.

    This looks very out.

They are walking off, it's a kind of cursory DRS.

Jack Leach is trapped in front. He reviews because he may as well. But I think that's the end of England's innings.

Forgot to mention, Matthew Potts is also out there with Leach. He has scored just 3 and a duck in his two England innings so far. I've heard he's better than those figures suggest.

Potts takes a quick single to mid-off. For a moment, it looks as if he may be in trouble as he takes on Kane Williamson's arm. But he's safe.

If you want an example of what Brendon McCullum is doing for this side it is that Jack Leach has come in at number 11 and hit back-to-back boundaries.
