Jon Evans: Root dropping it again. Has a habit of that in first slip.

  2. NZ 125-1published at 32.1 overs

Great control from Kane Williamson as he pounces on a short Stuart Broad delivery and powers a pull through mid-wicket for four.

The tempo of this New Zealand innings has impressed me. They've looked busy and put the bad ball away. They're doing it nicely.

  4. NZ 121-1published at 32 overs

Root then sends a wild one down leg that Tom Latham sweeps for four. That won't help his mood.

    Latham has raced onto 76.

  5. NZ 117-1published at 31.2 overs

    Hello.

Joe Root gets some turn and bounce, beating Tom Latham all ends up.

    Lovely delivery.

There didn’t seem to be any word between Joe Root and Stuart Broad at the end of the over. I still think Root has plenty of credit in the bank from his batting over the past 18 months.

Joe Root looks furious with himself, but he has a chance to make amends as he comes into the attack.

The good news is it has brightened up a bit.

I feel really sorry for Stuart Broad. He didn't even react. Root will be very disappointed with himself.

England have caught poorly. They need to do something about it because they're giving away the initiative.

  9. dropped catch

Latham dropped on 72published at 30.3 overs

    Would you believe it.

That's a great delivery from Stuart Broad as he gets the outside edge of Tom Latham's bat and Joe Root puts down a routine catch at first slip.

  10. NZ 116-1published at 30.2 overs

Stuart Broad overpitches first up and Tom Latham plays another of those lovely on drives four another boundary, before running two next ball to move on to 72.

Uh oh, I see some of the crowd are putting on coats and jackets...

  11. NZ 110-1published at 30 overs

It is getting a bit gloomy again at Headingley and the wind is picking up as Jack Leach whizzes through another maiden.

Looks like there is a change of bowling at the other end. Stuart Broad has the ball in hand as we edge towards tea.

Ben Wire: England's attitude has been great, but these two sides are also very well matched. Test cricket survives when it's genuinely a Test between well-matched teams - and recently we've either lacked the skill (India) or the application (West Indies). Roll on the new era.

    Latham 66, Williamson 32

Arrgh! There's more people standing in the batter's eyeline in the Howard Stand.

    Sort it out, guys.

I don't think Ben Stokes will be bowling for much longer.

Tom Latham has his number as he plays yet another clipped drive through that mid-wicket area.

Stokes has his head in his hands.

  15. NZ 106-1published at 28 overs

Ooh, some more turn and bounce for Jack Leach as he nearly tempts Kane Williamson into a waft outside off stump.

There is definitely something there for the England spinner, who bowls another maiden.

Williamson is just starting to get a bit of tempo; just starting to time it nicely. He's digging himself into a bit of form.

Jon Hayes: Does anyone think that we should have batted differently now New Zealand are making easy work of their 2nd innings?

Nigel Malone: And this is before Mitchell and Blundell get in...

That's better from Ben Stokes as he looks to get a touch of movement and beats Tom Latham outside his off stump.

Jamie Overton then saves his captain four runs with a great diving stop at square leg.

  19. Foakes will not play todaypublished at 15:16 British Summer Time 25 June 2022

News from the England camp on Ben Foakes, who has a stiff back...

He has returned to the team hotel and will not feature for the rest of today.

Jonny Bairstow will keep wicket and Foakes will be assessed overnight.

Harry Brook has returned to the England set-up after playing for Yorkshire in the T20 Blast and will be England’s main sub fielder for the rest of this Test.

  20. NZ 106-1published at 26.3 overs

These two are getting going now.

This is fantastic from Tom Latham as he leans into a full delivery from Ben Stokes and clips an on drive through mid-wicket for four.

Latham then repeats the trick next ball!

Stokes has conceded 26 from 15 balls so far.
