Overton is not designed to be a mean, length bowler. He is in there to hunt wickets rather than keep the scoring down.

  2. NZ 197-5published at 65.0 overs

Jamie Overton drops his first delivery of his second over a little short, and Tom Blundell rocks back and is able to whip it to the square leg boundary for four.

England have just let their grip from this morning slip a little.

I've loved the spirit in which this series has been played. Professional and friendly. Thoroughly enjoyable, sport at its best.

  4. NZ 193-5published at 64.0 overs

Jack Leach, shirt untucked and flapping in the wind, sees his second ball beautifully swept for four by Daryl Mitchell. The in-form Kiwi batter really got over the top of that and punished it.

Has anyone checked if Tom Blundell is actually BJ Watling wearing a Tom Blundell mask?

  6. NZ 189-5published at 63.0 overs

It's been nip and tuck but Tom Blundell did find the boundary earlier.

Meanwhile, Jamie Overton is into the attack for the first time today. Blundell whips his first ball off his legs for four, but Overton keeps him honest in the remainder of the over.

Arjun Singh: Honestly these two batsmen can’t succeed in every single innings, can they? They’ll be the new Bradman if they carry on.

  8. NZ 185-5published at 62.0 overs

Good move from Ben Stokes, giving the New Zealand something different about rather than letting them settle into a routine

Jack Leach, off a shorter more intent run-up, is picked off a single from his first ball but is otherwise tight outside Daryl Mitchell's off stump.

He gets a hearty hug from Sam Billings at the end of the over.

Jack Leach knows it's a big day and a big spell for him. It's an important spell. I'm backing him to bowl New Zealand out today.

  10. NZ 184-5published at 61.0 overs

Tom Blundell nudges on into the off side for a brisk single off Stuart Broad to break the tension. Just the one run off Broad's latest over.

Ben Stokes replaces Matthew Potts with left-arm spinner Jack Leach in search of a breakthrough this morning.

I saw Geoffrey Boycott this morning as I came in. We had a brief conversation about the way Stokes batted. He gave a wry look. I think you can read between the lines.

The cameras cut to the England balcony where you can only see Brendon McCullum's head peeping over. He's stroking his beard, like a U-boat captain who has surfaced and is nervously watching out from a tower scanning the vista, awaiting engagement with the enemy.

Matthew Potts is through another maiden over, challenging Daryl Mitchell - who has 11 from 47 balls - whether to leave or play outside his off stump.

New Zealand's batters have played well in these opening 40 minutes or so.

Rob 11:01 - maybe Foakes was having an abysmal test because he was feeling the effects of COVID-19 before testing positive? He played well up to that point...

There is something in the wicket. Broady is making the ball talk this morning. That's jagged back quite a lot.

  15. NZ 183-5published at 59.0 overs

A purse of the lips from Stuart Broad, a gasp from Sam Billings and cheeky grin from Ben Stokes after the England bowler cuts Daryl Mitchell in two with one that jags back sharply.

Could easily be a facial expressions from the cool lads at the back of the school bus on a sixth form history trip, as opposed to England cricketers.

Still a lot in this pitch for the bowlers.

Stuart Broad's Bandana: At this rate, there'll be more ball changes here than there will be at Wimbledon.

  17. NZ 176-5published at 58.0 overs

Geoffrey Boycott is present at Headingley looking resplendent in his Sunday best - camel blazer, canary yellow jumper and topped off with the signature panama hat.

Matthew Potts with another maiden - that's four back to back for England now.

He squares up Daryl Mitchell with a short one from his final delivery, which has the Kiwi back in the crease. Mitchell gives him a knowing nod of the head. That was a peach.

I don't know why they're looking to change this ball. Potts and Broad have been bowling nicely with it, getting some swing and movement.

  19. NZ 176-5published at 56.4 overs

The fourth umpire is on and a change of ball for England.

You may be wondering why we've had issues with cricket balls this summer. Well my colleague Martin Emmerson at BBC Radio Newcastle has explains all here...
