  2. Eng 18-1published at 7.3 overs

Zak Crawley is struck on the pads. Tim Southee, the sole appealer, is pleading with the umpire but it's a clear inside edge.

Midway through the over, Kane Williamson has the umpire checking the state of the ball.

It has been a much quieter start from England.

They are more watchful, perhaps aware of the importance of these opening exchanges.

    Target 296

I can't recall many instances of spectators moving behind the bowler's arm today. We had several over the past few days - it was getting quite frustrating. Perhaps someone had a word.

Play and a miss! Ollie Pope reaches at one well wide outside his off stump. Could have been an ugly dismissal.

Boult bowls a tighter line as Pope edges but with soft hands towards the slip cordon.

A third New Zealand maiden. The pressure is building.

Boult was absolutely superb there. The athleticism was magnificent.

  8. Eng 18-1published at 6 overs

Ollie Pope is the new man in. A leg bye brings Zak Crawley on strike who still doesn't look overly comfortable out there.

That wicket is a real big blow to England.

Not the way that New Zealand would have envisaged the first wicket.

Brilliant work. Brilliant by Williamson; brilliant by Boult. Lees committed himself.

  11. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 4.6 overs

    Lees run out (Williamson/Boult) 9 (Eng 17-1)

Sensational work in the field and Alex Lees' series is over.

Zak Crawley creams it to cover. Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson fields superbly and, while still on his knees, throws it to the non strikers end. Trent Boult runs back towards the stumps and in one swift motion whips off the bails.

Crawley was probably at fault there. He took a few paces down the track but didn't call the run with any real conviction.

This Test has proven that red-ball cricket is 17 times better than white-ball cricket. Maybe 18.

  13. Eng 17-0published at 4.3 overs

Calm down, ZaK. The England man nudges into the leg side and sets off for a single. He's a third of the way down the track before scrambling back with a dive.

Crawley then chops his bat down to a tight line and almost plays on. The opener seemed to be caught in two minds as to whether he should leave or not.

Re Chris 15:51. Did you have to mention capacity at Headingley!! I'm 18,133 in the queue.

    Colin, Barnard Castle

A hope watching the England chase tomorrow isn't as stressful as the hour and a half I've just spent in the online ticket queue.

  15. Eng 17-0published at 4 overs

    Target 296

Alex Lees latches onto some length and width from Southee to drive through backward point for four. Not where he aimed it but timed brilliantly.

Play is scheduled to finish at 18:19 BST tonight, with an option to play an extra half hour to get in the remaining 37 overs.

I couldn't even begin to predict what England's score will be at close of play.

Crawley went at it hard so it went quickly. He's miles away from it - his pad is nowhere near the ball. That is not a great shot.

  18. Eng 13-0published at 3 overs

Crawley flashes hard outside off stump and Tim Southee at second slip tips it over the bar!

It went at some pace. A terrible and needless choice of shot from Crawley - playing away from his body.

Having spoken to Brendon McCullum this morning, he was mentioning how he wants the openers, Zak in particular, to play more shots. I thought that was quite interesting. It's the ethos of the team.
