  1. dropped catch

Goodall dropped on 2published at 5 overs

    Oh no!

Kate Cross drags new batter, Lara Goodall, forward and draws the edge from the left-hander. It flies towards Sophie Ecclestone at second slip, but low down to her left she can't hang on.

It would have been a brilliant catch to be fair, but in a four-day Test chances have to be taken.

Kate Cross just got that to move enough.

A big wicket and the early breakthrough that England wanted! Kate Cross will be happy with her first international wicket of the summer.

    Steyn b Cross 8 (SA 14-1)

There are two types of leave ...

What a response to being thumped for four two balls previously! It's an error in judgement from Andrie Steyn, leaving the ball outside off stump that just nips in ever so slightly to clip the bails.

An early wicket is just what Heather Knight would've wanted when she chose to bowl first this morning.

That was just short and wide from Kate Cross and it got what it deserved. It is the first short ball really and it got the treatment.

  6. SA 14-0published at 4.1 overs

First boundary of the day! It's short and wide from Cross and Andrie Steyn gratefully accepts the invitation to cut it away past point for four runs.

A fine shot, and that'll give her some confidence.

The covers are coming off at Headingley!

There is even a bit of sunshine emerging from behind the clouds, prompting some supporters to emerge from behind the stands and take their seats.

The Super Soppers are now in overdrive trying to remove as much moisture from the surface as possible.

If there is no further rain we are on for a 12:00 BST start.

I just feels like that ball did too much - it felt it swung too much again.

England have found someone who can swing the ball around just as much as Anya Shrubsole. It feels like she's going to be around in international cricket for a long time.

  9. SA 10-0published at 4 overs

Another hooping inswinger from Bell crashes into Steyn's front pad, another appeal but another one denied.

It looked straighter than the last, but still probably going down leg.

Lauren Bell has struggled with her line a little bit this over - she's bowling a little bit too straight and the ball is just carrying down the legside.

  11. SA 9-0published at 3.3 overs

Lauren Bell is just struggling a little with how much the red ball is swinging for her, which isn't a bad problem to have if she can straighten her line a little.

One drifts down the leg side that Amy Jones fumbles and it races away for four byes.

  12. SA 4-0published at 3 overs

Kate Cross, rocking the messy bun (so impressed with how it stays in place while she bowls), delivers a maiden.

That was close. That is the length that she wants to be bowling - she wants to be bringing these two right-handers forward.

  14. SA 4-0published at 2 overs

If there are any debut nerves from Lauren Bell, they aren't evident.

There are cries of a chance as Andrie Steyn fences at one outside the off stump that just drops short of gully.

The final ball strikes Wolvaardt on the pad, there's a big appeal but it may have been swinging too much as the umpire is not interested. An excellent start, lots of movement out there for Bell.

I am absolutely made up for Lauren Bell. She's really bowled well in domestic cricket in the last couple of years.

She has looked completely at home during training with us in the last few weeks. She causes batters problems, not just with her height and pace, but also the inswing she gets.

    Now then, here we go.

Lauren Bell, nicknamed the Shard because of her height, shares the new ball with Cross. She's a very talented prospect with a natural inswinger, so a fine replacement for Anya Shrubsole.

That was a good ball from Kate Cross. There was just a hint of away movement.

  18. SA 2-0published at 1 over

Andrie Steyn gets South Africa off the mark with two runs clipped nicely off her legs before Cross finishes the over with a beauty that beats the batter outside the off stump.

The England players are rubbing their hands furiously and many of them are wearing their woolly jumpers.

    The great British summer, everyone.

  19. SA 0-0published at 0.1 overs

    Kate Cross to Andrie Steyn.

A good leave from Steyn first ball, close to the off stump but well judged in the end. The women's international summer is underway!

    Thanks, Tom!

There are some dark clouds emerging over Taunton, but we're ready to go. It's going to be exciting to see Lauren Bell and Issy Wong in action and see how they go with the red ball, having made names for themselves in domestic cricket in the shorter formats.

But first up, it's Kate Cross with the new ball. She's played second fiddle to Anya Shrubsole and Katherine Brunt for so long and this is a great opportunity for her.
