  2. 'We've been outplayed today'published at 21:49 British Summer Time 7 July 2022

England captain Jos Buttler to Sky Sports: "We've been outplayed today. I thought India bowled fantastically well and we couldn't get back in the game from that point.

"I through we came back really well and bowled with a lot of bravery. But the way India bowled at the start, the ball swung consistently in the first six overs and they took early wickets. It has probably swung for as long as I can remember in a T20 match. We needed to hit it in the stands to stop it swinging. But credit to India I thought they were fantastic."

"There's a number of guys out because of injury or the schedule and that gives opportunities to other players. I thought Matt Parkinson bowled with a lot of bravery and stood up to the challenge. That's what we want to see. We know they have the talent and want them to produce it on the big stage."

  3. 'We showed intent'published at 21:47 British Summer Time 7 July 2022

India captain Rohit Sharma, speaking to Sky Sports: "Was a great performance from ball one. There was an intent shown by the batters. The pitch was good so you could back yourself. At no point did we think we are trying to take the game ahead of ourselves. We back our basics of the game very well.

"You have to make use of the six overs when the fielders are outside and there is an approach we want to take. Sometimes it comes off, sometimes it doesn't. That's why the sport is so challenging. All the players need to buy into it, the whole batting unit need to see which way the team is going.

"Hardik prepared himself wonderfully from the IPL. His bowling is something he wanted to do more of. He came in, bowled quick, and got rewards for his variation. The opening bowlers swung the ball well which stopped England's batters in the powerplay. We took it into consideration with the toss."

I don't think you are going to see much difference from Jos Buttler despite the defeat. It's about just trusting and backing the players that are there. They will assess the way they played and I'm sure they will come back with refreshed minds and plans for the next game.

"Exceptional" was how Eoin Morgan has just described India's bowling. The difference , according to the former England captain, was the ball swinging around for the India bowlers which England's openers were not used to.

Take nothing away from India, who bowled extremely well to England's top order. Particularly Bhuvneshwar Kumar who got the ball hooping around and really set the tone.

Well done India. A really well put together game of cricket.

They got the runs on the board and scoreboard pressure meant once England got off to a bad start in the power play the game was all but done.

  9. India win by 50 runspublished at 21:37 British Summer Time 7 July 2022

    Tonked.

  10. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 19.3 overs

    Parkinson c Patel b Arshdeep (Eng 148ao)

Matt Parkinson pings Arshdeep Singh into the hands of Axar Patel at point, and it's all over for England. Not exactly the dream start Jos Buttler would have hoped for.

There was a brief flurry from Moeen Ali earlier which got the England fans off their seats.

  12. Eng 146-9published at 19.2 overs

Arshdeep Singh will get the chance to close the game out. Chris Jordan thrashes him down to long-off, but the ball drops just in front of the fielder.

A single to bring Matt Parkinson on strike.

  13. 6 runs

    Eng 146-9published at 19.0 overs

Chris Jordan gives any England fans who haven't made an early dart a treat.

He thumps Harshal Patel for back-to-back boundaries. First he flails him to long-off for four, then whacks him round the corner for six.

    Final over incoming.

  14. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 18.0 overs

    Topley c Karthik b Arshdeep Singh 9 (Eng 135-9)

Arshdeep Singh has his first international wicket with the final ball of the over. Not the prettiest dismissal, mind.

Reece Topley has an almighty heave at short ball dug into the pitch and gets a top edge and Dinesh Karthik claims a simple catch.

  15. Eng 133-8published at 17.4 overs

Arshdeep Singh, on his debut, still looks purposeful despite the game being effectively over as he chases his first international wicket.

That was an outstanding spell from Hardik Pandya. He's perfectly exploited the conditions.

England's hopes dissipated after Moeen Ali was out stumped.

  18. Eng 128-8published at 17.0 overs

Reece Topley is the new batter. Chris Jordan still there. England can only nudge singles now.

Hardik Pandya, who has 4-34 to go with his top score of 51, is a shoo-in for player of the match.

But they might be his lucky trousers?

I think Harshal Patel could have done with some slightly longer trousers. It looks like he's had them taken up too much.
