After a difficult winter there is definitely a buzz around English cricket at the moment.

We are only two days on from their remarkable Test record-breaking victory against India, with Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum's bold, attacking approach (I'm not going to say Baz-Ball) reaping instant dividends.

Meanwhile, the one-day side hit a record 498-6 during the 3-0 series win against the Netherlands last month.

So what can we expect from the T20 side? Jos Buttler has promised his side will be "really aggressive and not afraid of failure".

    Hold onto your hats.

Former England captain Eoin Morgan, speaking to Sky Sports: "It's the end of something I'm extremely proud of but it's about the future now which is exciting. The timing is perfect for Jos Buttler to come as captain. Not only with his form with the bat but his contribution to the team by pushing players around him. Building that relationship with the coach between now and the World Cup will be the challenge for him.

"Jos is softly spoken around the team. His messages are always very clear. He sits on top of every other batter in white-ball cricket, but he's an incredible leader. He is very feisty when it comes to crunch moments which shows he's passionate."

    Speaking of Eoin Morgan....

  4. Under new managementpublished at 17:47 British Summer Time 7 July 2022

    So why are we here?

Well, former vice-captain Buttler took over from Eoin Morgan last week after the 50-over World Cup-winning skipper retired from international cricket (a much smoother transfer of power than what we are witnessing elsewhere).

He will work alongside newly-appointed Australian head coach Matthew Mott as they plot a hectic schedule that also includes series against South Africa, Pakistan and Australia this summer before the start of the T20 World Cup in October.

Looking further ahead there is also the small matter of the defence of their 50-over World Cup title in India in October 2023.

The last time England were here the Ageas Bowl was a place of bubbles, hand sanitizer and temperature checks. Thankfully that is no more. Should be a belter…

Rohit Sharma, speaking to Sky Sports at the toss: "It looks like a good pitch and a decent ground to play,. We thought it looks a good pitch, the sun is out and best thing to do is bat first, I'm recovered pretty well. I had a couple of hits before this game so I'm looking forward to it.

"It is something we prepared for as well. We know the scheduling. We understand players will be swapped. It's a good thing as well because you can create strength and opportunities for the guys. These guys have been here for a while, played in Ireland, and a few practice games.

"Arshdeep Singh is someone who has done well in the IPL and looks an exciting prospect. A good chance to see what he can do."

England captain Jos Buttler: "A very proud day and I'm looking forward to the challenges ahead.

"Eoin has left the team in a great place and the pressure is on to keep going forward.

"Richard Gleeson, David Willey and Phil Salt are the unfortunate ones to miss out. Liam Livingstone and Moeen Ali give us plenty of options with the bat and ball."

Welcome to coverage of the first Twenty20 international between England and India at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton as the Jos Buttler era gets under way.

It is a beautiful sunny evening on the south coast so we should set for an on-time start with no interruptions.
