  1. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 2 overs

    Root c Rohit b Siraj 0 (Eng 12-2)

Joe Root goes! It's another duck. Beautiful bowling from Mohammed Siraj who just gets the ball up there at decent pace. It nibbles a little and Root, prodding outside off stump, edges to second slip.

    It's a double-wicket maiden for Siraj.

A huge wicket for India. The kind of start they would have wanted, especially Mohammed Siraj who is still very early in his ODI career.

Jonny Bairstow was very early in his shot, caught the leading edge and it was a simple catch in the end.

  3. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 1.3 overs

    Bairstow c Iyer b Siraj 0 (Eng 12-1)

Ah. It's an all-action start in Manchester.

Jason Roy is off to a flyer at the one end but Jonny Bairstow falls for a three-ball duck at the other. He tries to work Mohammed Siraj to leg and gets a leading edge, the ball looping up for the simplest catches at mid-off.

Virat Kohli, as ever, is not shy in celebrating.

This is the first time an England opener has reached 12 after the first four balls of a one-day international since Ian Botham against Pakistan in August 1992 off the bowling of Wasim Akram.

  5. Eng 12-0published at 1 over

    Roy 12, Bairstow 0

Mohammed Shami comes back well, beating Jason Roy with the final ball of his over. The pitch looks good. The two previously in this series have been tricky in fairness to the batters.

  7. Eng 12-0published at 0.4 overs

    Yep. Another one.

After two games where England's batters seemed to forget all about their white-ball success, this is something resembling normality.

Jason Roy whips a leg-stump half-volley to the fence. Four balls. Three fours to Roy.

  8. Eng 8-0published at 0.2 overs

Four more! This time Roy clips over the leg-side. It's a little awkward but whistles off to the boundary.

That's a huge confidence booster. A fabulous shot.

  10. Eng 4-0published at 0.1 overs

Here we go. Jason Roy lurches onto the front foot and drives the first ball of the game for four!

  11. Eng 0-0published at 11:00 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

Mohammed Shami is going to take the new ball. Jason Roy is on strike.

    Let's play.

Anyway, Jonny Bairstow is striding out to the middle alongside Jason Roy.

It is a big day of sport today. How will England fare in this series decider?

It's warm but actually a little overcast in Manchester. I'm already worried about the 36 degree heat forecast for my trip to Chester-le-Street on Tuesday.

No-one has hit a 50 for England in this series yet. And only one India batter has - Rohit Sharma in the first ODI.

  18. 'We would have batted anyway'published at 10:38 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

England captain Jos Buttler: "We would have batted first anyway. It looks a good wicket and it looks hard. It's a bit cloudy and muggy so might swing for a bit, but we're happy.

"It's great for the series that this is a decider. It's going to be loud."

That's a blow for India. Jasprit Bumrah is replaced in their XI by Mohammed Siraj.

    England are unchanged.

  20. 'Bumrah misses out'published at 10:34 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

India captain Rohit Sharma: "It looks like a good track, nice and hard. I don't think it is going to change. We thought we would have a score in front of us.

"Our bowlers have come out with great guns. Hopefully we can do the same today."

On his team: "Bumrah has a back spasm. He misses out."
