  1. Ind 79-4published at 16.5 overs

Hardik Pandya is off the mark with a push for three to the longest boundary, with Stokes' throw like a tracer bullet back to the keeper.

Pant then responds with a superb back-cut to the boundary at third.

That was a beauty. Overton came a bit wider on the crease and angled it in. That made it harder to get the ball down to third.

England are in a very good place.

I take it all back, Jos...

Craig Overton tempts Suryakumar Yadav into a nudge outside the off stump and the England captain makes amends by taking an easy catch to set India back even further.

It was a beauty of a ball - a perfect length that went above the eyeline but dipped.

Pant through the kitchen sink so hard and swung around that I wondered whether he would have got back into his ground.

  6. Missed stumping - Pant missed by Buttlerpublished at 16:21 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

    Oh dear, Jos.

Pant comes down the track to Moeen and flails away. The ball zips past the edge, but also past Buttler's gloves and also past Root's right hand at slip for a bye.

I'm no keeper and I know they're not easy, but they've got to be taken.

  8. Ind 68-3published at 15 overs

Craig Overton follows his heroics in the deep by replacing Brydon Carse at the James Anderson End.

And Pant has clearly had enough of all this circumspection, slashing wildly at one and edging the ball down over where slip would have been.

  9. Ind 61-3published at 14 overs

I feel Suryakumar and Pant are chafing at the bit, but they are taking the long view by reining themselves in with three wickets down and just under 200 still needed.

@ 15:54 Tattz in Harborne. I would like to add matching pairs of socks to the list and money from my wallet when left with my brother.

    Harry

Yes. This sock/Biro wormhole is clearly a nationwide problem.

  11. Ind 54-3published at 12.3 overs

That's great cricket - a superb cut by Pant is just stopped inside the boundary by the diving Craig Overton. Did he flip it back without touching the boundary sponge thingy?

    Yes! *doffs cap*

He may not be in great form, but getting Virat Kohli out is not to be sniffed at.

  13. Ind 52-3published at 12 overs

Now then, Moeen Ali is on and Pant is at the crease. This could be lively.

In fact it is all quite calm, and Moeen's first over goes for a run a ball without any pyrotechnics.

In the least surprising news of the day, I can confirm it's stupidly hot out there. What's worse is the breeze. Not cooling, but instead making you feel like you're walking around in a tumble dryer.

  15. Ind 46-3published at 11 overs

Here's Brydon Carse, replacing Topley. It's not the most fluent run and action but he's clearly a hit-the-deck-hard bowler that England want to take an extended look at.

He's already bowling at a decent lick - 88 miles per hour. Dr Emmett Brown would be pleased with that.

    James Anderson
England bowler on Test Match Special

Ben Stokes is so keen on his fielding. He feels he can add to the team and take wickets without batting or bowling.

Reece Topley is having another day to remember, knocking the top off the India card with some top drawer players sent back to the dressing room.

  18. Ind 43-3published at 10 overs

Ben Stokes races around to send in a one handed pick up and throw at the stumps to get Pant scrambling for a quick single

The worm shows India are 23 runs behind England. India are 43 for 3 after 10 overs. At the same stage England were 66 for 3.

Can I add 'all my Biro's' to that?

Reece Topley has taken 9-35 in 14 overs in the last two games.
