I had tears in my eyes when I saw Nortje bowling before, hitting 92, 93mph. So much jealousy that he is out there.

    Target 334

Joe Root had a poor series against India, making 0, 0 and 11 in the three games.

He looks much more like the Root we're accustomed to seeing already as he gets on the back foot and works through the leg side for a couple.

England will want him to anchor the rest of this innings, similarly to how Rassie van der Dussen did for the tourists.

WinViz has it 52-48% in South Africa's favour at the moment.

How costly could that drop be?

  4. Postpublished at 18:59 British Summer Time 19 July 2022

    Thanks Ffion.

England need 228 from 30 overs - that equates to 7.60 runs per over from here.

Who do you fancy? Thumbs up for England or thumbs down for South Africa.

    Should be a cracker.

  5. Eng 106-1published at 20 overs

    Target 334

David Miller dropped Bairstow earlier off Ngidi's own bowling, so that's not great.

Can Bairstow make the most of it? Still a long way to go for England and here's Callum Matthews to take you through the middle overs.

That is a simple catch or should have been. You saw Ngidi when that ball went up and he never really fancied it.

    Dropped it. Oh, it's appalling.

  8. dropped catch

Bairstow dropped on 50published at 19.3 overs

    Oh! Bairstow gets another life.

He top edges off a quick Nortje bouncer and it travels high, high in the air. Lungi Ngidi never looks comfortable, never looks like he's confident of catching it and it's spilled.

That's a shocker. Head down, avoid eye contact for a few overs.

Roy slashes at the air in frustration. A really good catch from Miller. He kept his eyes on it and as he tumbled, one arm went into the air in celebration.

  10. wicket

    Roy c Miller b Maharaj 43 (Eng 102-1)

Jason Roy gets the boundary he was so desperately seeking ... but gets out next ball!

Having reverse swept to the ropes the ball before, Roy tries to loft Maharaj over his head but instead picks out David Miller - who earlier dropped Bairstow - and he takes a fine, sprawling catch out at long-off.

It wasn't easy going for Roy but that's a solid opening partnership for England after a brutal afternoon in the field.

This glorious summer for Jonny Bairstow continues.

  12. 50 runs

50 for Jonny Bairstowpublished at 18.3 overs

    Eng 98-0

A 15th ODI half-century for that man Jonny Bairstow! What a summer he's having.

It's not been in his usual blistering style but still a very important knock. The bowlers will certainly be grateful he's given them a bit of a break.

  13. Eng 96-0published at 18 overs

    Target 334

A calm dot ball to finish the over and normal service is resumed.

He's up, he didn't need a stretcher in the end which is good news. He's holding onto his chin but he's got a smile on his face.

  15. Postpublished at 18:48 British Summer Time 19 July 2022

That'd be a red card if we were playing rugby. A really nasty blow for Phehlukwayo who cops one on the chin.

He's OK though, on his feet and walking off.

It doesn't look nice this, they're calling for some sort of paramedic from the side.

There is a bit of a collision. The end result is going to be four runs but fielder at mid-on has run straight into the fielder at mid-off. Hopefully, it's not too serious.

  19. ouch!

    Eng 96-0published at 17.5 overs

Ouch! Jonny Bairstow thumps one down the ground, it looks like a simple single to mid-off but the two fielders collide and the ball runs through them both for four.

It doesn't look good. Phehlukwayo is on the ground, being assessed. Let's hope all is OK.

Driven beautifully. A shot of high class from Jonny Bairstow. He stood up tall and banged it through the covers.
