Wow, that was a whisker away. It didn't bounce.

England are again into their finishers with captain Jos Buttler out in the middle. With Moeen Ali, Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran to come there is a lot of power remaining but England need someone to knuckle down and score runs.

It will be interesting to see how England replace Stokes - the balance of the side feels all wrong at the moment. They need at least one more batter, if not two, in this side.

Uff! Almost another wicket as Joe Root misses an attempted slog sweep and the ball only just misses his off-stump by a whisker.

Everyone, including the England dressing room, on their feet as Stokes leaves the field for the final time in this format.

He leaves here as a legend of the 50-over game.

He opts not to review and that is the end of Ben Stokes' one-day international career. He soaks in the applause and adulation of this crowd at his home ground.

It wasn't the spectacular end that his spectacular career deserved but what a spectacular ODI career it has been.

Ben Stokes' one-day international career is over.

It is the arm ball from Aiden Markram and Stokes looks to reverse sweep but misses and is hit on the pads. Richard Kettleborough has a little think before raising his finger.

Stokes has a chat with Joe Root, who is encouraging him to review I think, but the former shakes his head and decides to go. It is another example of the selflessness of the Stokes.

It is a disappointing end for Stokes but what a career he's had. Nobody will ever forget the World Cup final in 2019. Thank you for the memories, Stokesy.

You're looking at a Joe Root hundred if England are going to win. He's the key.

England are 200 away from victory with 23 overs left. The run-rate will have to improve quick soon.

    Yes, Joe Root.

After two dot balls he decides to take some action.

He skips down the track and whacks Aiden Markram back over his head for his first six.

It is a relatively risk-free shot with the man up in the ring, rather than on the boundary.

Last stint of the day, I'm upset. So emotional, Stokesy's last game, I'm welling up.

  11. Eng 134-2published at 27 overs

    Target 334

Another really tight over by stand-in captain Keshav Maharaj, going for just three singles.

I don't want to prattle on about the required run-rate but it sneaks up further to 8.70. England won't want that to get near 10.

You should just mark it out with your feet, you don't need a tape measure. He's stopped the whole game here!

  13. Postpublished at 19:26 British Summer Time 19 July 2022

    Oh, cricket.

Dwaine Pretorius isn't even bowling yet...

I'd say South Africa have the slight upper hand. They've got control of the run-rate at the moment. If they can keep on top of that for a while, it's going to be tough for England.

  15. Eng 131-2published at 26 overs

    Target 334

Another good over from Aiden Markram as he concedes just four singles.

Oh wow. Dwaine Pretorius has called up to the South African changing room saying he needs the tape measure - he needs to mark out his bowling run-up. He's got the spray can out too.

Oh he's doing it from both ends. This game might finish in about two-and-a-half hours at this rate.

  16. Postpublished at 19:23 British Summer Time 19 July 2022

This was a pretty horrific drop from Lungi Ngidi...

He'll just be glad it only cost his side 13 runs.

The stage is set for Stokes in a way. He's got the chance to play a substantial innings.

  18. Eng 127-2published at 25 overs

    Target 334

Oh. South Africa have made a concussion sub with Andile Phehlukwayo showing signs of concussion in the changing room.

Dwaine Pretorius is the direct replacement and he'll be able to bowl for the tourists. He's got some canny change-ups and bowled well at the death in the T20 World Cup last year so he could come in handy if this game gets tight.

The required run-rate has sneaked up to 8.28 now. England are starting to drop away.

They're all standing up around us, applauding Ben Stokes as he makes his way to the middle. It's almost as if it's his last game, we'll see see him for England in other formats but that is the loudest ovation we've heard today.

  20. Eng 127-2published at 24.2 overs

Ben Stokes is up and running first ball, with a drive back down the ground for a single.

It brings a cheer from the Durham crowd.
