We're used to seeing England go hell for leather in the powerplay but there's been a bit of a different approach today.

  2. Eng 59-0published at 12 overs

    Target 334

A tidy start. Just the three from it.

Will we see an acceleration from England soon? It feels like this chase just needs a bit of energy.

  3. Postpublished at 18:15 British Summer Time 19 July 2022

A change of bowling. Here's the leg-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi.

    Ebony Rainford-Brent
Former England batter on Test Match Special

I wanted it but it was just a long way to go all around the ground.

The question on many people's minds: did you go for your proper fish and chips?

  6. Eng 56-0published at 11 overs

    Target 334

A half-hearted appeal as Jonny Bairstow misses one down the leg side.

A great tumbling stop from Quinton de Kock behind the stumps but there was no bat. England looking a lot more comfortable now.

Just almost patting the ball on its head and helping it around the corner. But such is the form Bairstow is in, it flies away to the boundary.

    Ebony Rainford-Brent
Former England batter on Test Match Special

If England do find that timing and flow then runs will come quickly. They won't hold back with this line-up.

  9. Eng 52-0published at 10.2 overs

Don't drop Jonny Bairstow! Nortje drops one short, it's quick but Bairstow's hands are quicker.

He jabs it past mid-wicket for four.

  10. Postpublished at 18:10 British Summer Time 19 July 2022

    Ebony Rainford-Brent
Former England batter on Test Match Special

He did all the hard work. He held himself a fraction to get the timing of the jump right, he held the pose and then just took his eye off it and snatched at the ball.

    Frustrating for the bowler.

It almost looked as though Miller mistimed the jump. He leapt with one hand and the ball squirmed out. Should have taken it.

  12. dropped catch

Bairstow dropped on 18published at 10 overs

    Eng 47-0

Oh, nearly! Bairstow fluffs one up in the air towards mid-off where David Miller tries to take the ball over his head but parries it over the crossbar.

Not the easiest, but he's such a brilliant fielder he'd expect to take it.

  13. Postpublished at 18:07 British Summer Time 19 July 2022

12 degrees! How good does that sound. (Yes I know I'll be moaning that it's too cold in a few days.)

  14. Postpublished at 18:03 British Summer Time 19 July 2022

    Henry Moeran

It is. There are lows of 12 degrees here tomorrow...

    James Anderson
England bowler on Test Match Special

I think that's understandable given the conditions.

  16. Postpublished at 18:02 British Summer Time 19 July 2022

    BBC Test Match Special

    It's unusually quiet here today.

  17. Eng 44-0published at 9 overs

    Target 334

More luck for Jason Roy! It's a good length ball from Anrich Nortje that is swiped into the leg side and somehow goes for four.

That was an ugly shot. A shot of a man who is desperate for some runs.

  18. Postpublished at 17:59 British Summer Time 19 July 2022

England have put the loose ball away nicely. They also managed to hit a six in the third over - something South Africa didn't manage once in 50.

  19. Postpublished at 17:57 British Summer Time 19 July 2022

    James Anderson
England bowler on Test Match Special

It looks like England are setting their stall out to do something they haven't done for a while, bat the 50 overs.

  20. Eng 37-0published at 8 overs

    Target 334

A slow but steady start from England's openers which is not usually the approach that we see from them.

But South Africa have bowled well and worked out the pitch pretty quickly. This one's going to go deep.
