Matthew Potts makes his ODI debut after an extremely impressive start to Test cricket this summer, joining Ben Stokes and Brydon Carse as the third Durham product playing on their home ground today.

Sam Curran returns and Adil Rashid is back after making the Hajj pilgrimage.

For South Africa, Keshav Maharaj is standing in as captain for the injured Temba Bavuma while Kagiso Rabada is also not in the XI, so two big losses for the visitors.

  2. 'I was always going to have to choose one of the white-ball formats'published at 12:50 British Summer Time 19 July 2022

Ben Stokes talking to BBC Test Match Special: "It is just one of those things. You hear everyone say ‘when you know, you know’ and it is obviously not an easy decision to make and there were a lot of things that I considered.

"One was the longevity in the sport – I want to be playing as long as I can, and now being the Test captain that is where everything is at for me at the moment.

"I was always going to have to choose one or the other of the white-ball formats to stop playing and then focus on the other alongside Test cricket but after the first game against India at The Oval, it sort of just hit me that it was going to have to be this format because not being able to go out there and give everything that I can – I’ve been an all-rounder with the bat and ball – and I feel like I have to look after myself with games in the future and that isn’t what the England shirt deserves.

"It deserves 100% from whoever puts the shirt on so with that and also feeling like I’m stopping someone else coming into the team and progressing themselves as a player and going on to create some amazing memories, like I have in the last 11 years, with an amazing group of players and all that considered it was ‘right, the time is now’."

Of course, this game is Ben Stokes' farewell to ODI cricket. The all-rounder said that playing three formats is "unsustainable" for him when he announced his retirement from the format yesterday.

It is his 105th game and what a career - the highlight undoubtedly being his match-winning performance in the World Cup final against New Zealand in 2019.

It is fitting that he plays his last game at Durham, his home ground. Those are some pretty big shoes to fill!

England captain Jos Buttler: "We would have batted first too, it looks a very good surface and is obviously a very hot day.

"It's going to be an emotional day for us and for Ben [Stokes] in his last game and on his home ground too. Hopefully we can send him off with a win.

"Matthew Potts will make his debut, Adil Rashid is back and Sam Curran comes in.

"We've got improvements to make with the bat [from the India series] and we know we've been short of runs. It's been a big strength of ours for a long period of time so we want to get back to our best."

I grew up about 20 minutes from this ground and I can confirm I have never known it this hot. My car said 35.5 degrees when I arrived.

There's actually some high hazy cloud but it's sweltering.

South Africa captain Keshav Maharaj: "It looks a little bit dry and hopefully it will deteriorate as the game goes on and then if we can get some runs it will put some pressure on the batters in the second innings.

"The preparation has been very good. We had two constructive warm-up games and the boys have accalmistised nicely to the heat and they are excited to go."
