That's it from us then as England suffer another defeat to go 1-0 down in the three-match series with South Africa, as Ben Stokes bows out from ODI cricket.

He has done so much for England in the 50-over format over the years but, of course, it is his heroics in the 2019 World Cup final at Lord's for which he will be best remembered.

You can read Matthew Henry's excellent match report on Stokes' ODI farewell here.

You can also watch highlights on BBC Two & iPlayer from 23:15 BST.

Meanwhile, Jos Buttler's side, sans Stokes, will aim to bounce back at Old Trafford on Friday, we'll be back for that one. See you then!

The outcome of the game was pretty much assured long before it finished but when the end came, it all happened in a hurry.

Anrich Nortje ended with 4-53 after removing Joe Root, Sam Curran and Adil Rashid in the same over before wrapping things up with the wicket of Brydon Carse in his next.

    England all out for 271.

Player of the Match Rassie van der Dussen on Sky Sports: "It's been a hot day! We are used to the heat in South Africa but it was very dry today and quite windy, which made it difficult.

"It was a good toss to win and bat first, I think they struggled a bit in the heat and our bowlers executed perfectly at the end.

"We came into this tour knowing we'd have to play smart cricket. It's a big ground, we knew we would have to hit the gaps hard and run hard. Physically it was tough but we back ourselves and our fitness. We didn't hit a six, which I don't think I've ever seen! But it was a very good batting display.

"Aiden played brilliantly. Everyone who came in showed great intent and body language. We are pretty happy with the batting.

"We've had 10 good days of preparation here now. We know it's going to be a tough tour, this is only one game, so we will enjoy this one and then get back on it tomorrow."

I thought South Africa judged the game perfectly.

They did exactly what they needed to at the toss and then didn't really take any risks during their innings - they just played good cricket shots and ran brilliantly between the wickets. When it came to the bowling they used the conditions well.

What I was probably most impressed by, on what is a big outfield, was their fielding. It was outstanding. They were quick to the ball and there wasn't really a weak link in the field. That really impressed me today - they look like a really good all-round unit.

England captain Jos Buttler on BBC Test Match Special: "We never quite managed to break that partnership and that really extended the game away from us. It was probably a good toss to win on a day like today where it was incredibly warm. It was quite sapping in the field - I can't fault anyone, I thought we were outstanding, especially backing up a game two days later in this heat. With the bat we never quite managed to impose ourselves. I thought South Africa bowled very smartly and didn't give ourselves much to hit but we couldn't quite put enough pressure on them.

"It was incredibly warm. It's normally woolly hats and gloves up here at Durham so it was a bit different. It was a bit extreme but we play in conditions like this in other parts of the world as well but the toss was a good one to win today. The pitch, even through the South Africa innings, got harder as it got on and probably the same in our innings - it just a bit slower and lower and we never managed to time the ball brilliantly.

"We just haven't quite played to our potential yet this summer. We are a different team at the minute. There is a pretty inexperienced bowling attack with not loads of games under their belt and I think we're learning about those guys and about us a team. We haven't quite find our rhythm in 50-over cricket as we have for a long period of time, but I'm not sure it is far away but it feels like we're getting back to where we need to be."

More from Jos Buttler: "It certainly feels like a little bit of a changing of the times for us, it certainly feels that we need to rebuild from another point of view. But we've got fantastic players with an opportunity and others guys waiting in the wings to come back. I'm very confident in the team.

On Ben Stokes: "From myself and all England fans, we want to say thank you for everything he has done in this form of the game. I know three years ago will live long in the memory but every day he turns up for this team, he puts in 100%. He's been a fantastic ambassador for us in ODI cricket and we'll miss him."

South Africa captain Keshav Maharaj on Sky Sports: "The boys were really clinical today. Rassie set the tone with the bat and then the bowlers stuck really well to their plans so full credit to everyone for their performances.

"We didn't expect a heatwave in England to quite be this hot, it was quite nostalgic, like being at home! But we worked really hard today, and thankfully there weren't too many casualties on the pitch.

"Andile Phehlukwayo is fine, he's got a minor concussion but I'm sure he will recover quickly. He must have underestimated my size!

"The openers set the platform for us up top and then Rassie played a very special innings. He set the tempo and everyone around him played really nicely. Partnerships were key today and I'm very happy to be on the winning side.

"Aiden Markram's bowling is very underrated, it's good to see him get some rewards today.

"Nortje knows his role within the team, he bowled with great discipline today to get the wickets that he did."

England captain Jos Buttler: "A tough day, I thought the effort from the guys was outstanding having to field first in that heat. I thought it was a good toss to win and we just couldn't find those breakthrough.

"It was a fantastic partnership between Van der Dussen and Markram and we just couldn't break that. You need to try and take wickets to stem the flow of runs in this format of the game.

"They ran well as well, there were some big pockets in the ground and they picked up twos and put us under pressure that way as well.

"We never quite managed to impose ourselves with the bat in the chase. I thought the wicket got slower and lower as well and made it harder to time the ball. It wasn't through lack of trying but we never managed to put enough pressure on them."

On the powerplay approach: "I don't think it was a lack of effort, those two guys at the top are explosive players and try to impose themselves but South Africa read the conditions well.

"They were smart with the way they bowled and we were never able to get away."

On pressure building: "I think we've been improving through the games we've played and, of course, we're missing some experienced guys and we're going to lose another one but that creates great opportunity for others."

The batting line-up is pretty much the group that won the World Cup in 2019 apart from Liam Livingstone. They just haven't fired or got going at all. They haven't found any form as a group.

They are not far away but that is probably the thing. It is the form, they are all desperately trying to find it.

Set 334 to win, England got off to a good start through Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow but just could not kick on as the South Africa bowlers showed great discipline.

Seeing Ben Stokes bowl today showed he wasn't quite at 100% - he is carrying a couple of injuries that he is having to manage, which he should be able to do now he isn't playing 50-over cricket.

He struggled with the bat again too. He hasn't quite found the form - in red or white-ball cricket - with the bat yet this summer.

It is disappointing for him but he has had an amazing career and he's been amazing for England and contributed massively to what has been a brilliant period for English white-ball cricket.

It has been impressive from South Africa.

They won the toss and then put runs on the board. They read the conditions, the wicket and dimensions of the ground and they were defensive in defending their total.

Nortje finishes it off. A brilliant all-round display from South Africa.

Carse went for another big shot but the ball came off the toe-end of the bat and was comfortably held at long-on.

An excellent start for the tourists but the end of an era for England as Ben Stokes, World Cup final hero in 2019, bows out from ODI cricket with a defeat.

It isn't as simple as Eoin Morgan retiring. He won't have told anyone how to play the game, he was just about creating an environment. That won't have changed because he isn't there.

The dressing room hasn't changed a great deal - he was a big person - but Jos Buttler will have the same sort of ideas and mindset.
