    Hmmmm.

Jos Buttler tries to pick up and whack over the leg side but the ball keeps a little low and he isn't able to time it properly.

It felt like a sixth wicket was coming but thankfully for England it drops short of the field.

They are struggling to score freely now all of a sudden.

There is no doubt there is a bit of swing and nip but it is the manner of the dismissals. A lot of shots were false shots. It just seems the same pattern. Fair play to South Africa.

Seeming we're effectively treating this game as a T20, I've referred to the ICC rankings for that format instead.

South Africa are bringing on number-three ranked Tabraiz Shamsi.

Bodes well when England have already lost five wickets...

England's running has been pretty good today, it's something we didn't see at Durham. They've been better at stealing quick singles.

  6. drinks break

    Eng 77-5published at 13 overs

More appeals and yelps from South Africa as Dwaine Pretorius crashes one into the pads of Jos Buttler.

It looks a decent shot because Buttler is a fair way across, but I reckon it is still going down the leg side.

The players are taking drinks at this point. I have no idea what Buttler and Liam Livingstone could be saying to each other.

I reckon the Old Trafford scoreboard is the quickest to update in world cricket. Whoever is doing that is an absolute ninja.

Here's the wicket of Joe Root...

    He knew straight away.

The first sign of spin. Most of the balls Maharaj has bowled have skidded on but that has turned and bounced. It's hit Quinton de Kock on the shoulder.

  10. Eng 72-5published at 12 overs

How has that not bowled him?

Liam Livingstone is greeted by an absolute beauty from Keshav Maharaj.

There is spin and bounce and it goes past the defence of Livingstone. It surprises Quinton de Kock and he can't gather cleanly.

    A great delivery that.

It feels like every attacking shot that England have played in the last few overs has gone to hand.

Moeen Ali has not played an attacking shot in his innings yet and when he does, he pulls it straight to the man at deep backward square.

  12. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 11.3 overs

    Moeen c Nortje b Maharaj 6 (Eng 72-5)

    Dreadful!

Moeen Ali looks to take on Keshav Maharaj for the first time but he hits it straight down the throat of Anrich Nortje on the deep square leg boundary.

Deary me. England are in a real hole.

Jason Cole: Eoin... come back! All is forgiven.

Adam Watson: How can a great team unravel so quickly? The batting looks so scarily good on paper but this summer has been miserable.

  14. Eng 71-4published at 11 overs

Oh! Moeen Ali is squared up by Dwaine Pretorius and an edge just evades Quinton de Kock and runs away for four runs.

Earlier I asked what we think a good score would be. Any thoughts now? I tentatively said around 215 at the time. It feels like England would do well to get there at the moment.

It's not just about a win, I want to see more complete performances with the bat. There is an element of luck, too. Jos hasn't won a toss yet and has been put in to bat in difficult conditions.

You need things to go your way and, at the moment, everything seems to be going against England. I don't think they need to get too down.

Phil Salt looked in decent touch, but he wasn't able to build on his start of 17...

  17. Eng 66-4published at 10 overs

Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali are going to have rebuild for England. How long do they do that for though? Five overs? They'd still have 14 overs to attack then.

They take four singles off Keshav Maharaj.

Melissa Story: Did England’s men mishear the umpire? It’s 29 overs lads, not a T10.

  19. Eng 62-4published at 9 overs

Just in case you've lost track, Moeen Ali and Jos Buttler are now the two England batters in.

Dwaine Pretorius has 3-9 from his two overs.

It's a good ball, good length, coming back into the right-handed Bairstow. Looks like he's tried to work it to leg when he should have played straighter.

That's always nice the ball after being hit for four.
