Tom: Zak Crawley can not continue in international cricket. A walking wicket.

Sporting Badger: Zak Crawley just isn't good enough. Surely we have better?

JayRad: 25-2, Joe Root at the crease. I feel like we can relax for a bit now.

This is hostile stuff from Rabada.

  3. Eng 25-2published at 9 overs

Kagiso Rabada greets Joe Root with a rising delivery that has Root swerving out of the way.

    Welcome back, Joe.

Crawley was trying to play it late, it wasn't a big hard push at the ball as we have previously seen. But the pressure will now mount on him.

    Crawley c Markram b Rabada 9 (Eng 25-2)

    Well. Well done, me.

That's another low score for Zak Crawley, I'm afraid. A wobble seam delivery from Kagiso Rabada, who had been causing him all sorts of bother throughout the over, and Crawley plays away from his body and sends a thick outside edge to Aiden Markram at second slip.

    Sigh.

Early days, of course, but I will say that Zak Crawley is leaving a lot better than he was at the start of the summer.

He has had a torrid few months and I think a lot of unfair, overly personal criticism. Be nice to see him in the runs today, or at least find some confidence at the top level.

The pitch looks really good. Evenly paced with good carry and some swing in the air.

Crawley has looked very controlled and Ollie Pope has started well.

So that is definitely my first commentator's curse of the day...

  8. Eng 18-1published at 8 overs

Oh! Ollie Pope tries to leave again and, once again, ends up toe-ending the ball perilously close to the nearby fielders. He's lucky, really, that this one bounces just past the stumps.

Pope gets rapped on the pads by Ngidi, too leg-side to trouble the umpires, before he advances down the wicket and clips away another couple of runs.

Great seam position from Rabada again and it is doing a bit off the pitch as well.

He is looking in good rhythm.

  10. Eng 15-1published at 5 overs

Nice. Ollie Pope goes deep into his crease and flicks Kagiso Rabada away for a pretty three runs.

Anrich Nortje, diving in the deep, takes an absolute chunk out of the ground with his knee as he slides to stop the ball. Always feel a bit uneasy, seeing that happen. Too many visions of nasty injuries...

Rabada ends the over with a delivery that beats Crawley's outside edge.

That was like a no-look pass in basketball. He completely sold him a dummy and I think Crawley would have been done for.

That was a good bit of work.

  12. Eng 12-1published at 5 overs

    Crawley 5, Pope 1

A terrific bit of fielding from Rassie van der Dussen at short leg catches Zak Crawley out, the batter just idling before turning back and thrusting his bat over the line. If that had hit he might have been in trouble...

Ngidi then torments Crawley's outside edge with the penultimate ball of the over.

Lovely shot. Crawley just stood up and played it straight past Ngidi.

That will make him feel a lot more comfortable.

  14. Eng 12-1published at 4.2 overs

Folks, it's been going for 22 minutes. Give them a chance!

There's something to raise your spirits - a glorious on-drive from Zak Crawley to send Lungi Ngidi away for four. That was a beautiful stroke, waited on beautifully by Crawley.

David Hill: England players are seriously under-cooked. The Test players should’ve played in the lions game for match practice.

Laurie Whitten: Have to keep heads down and get the front foot up the pitch, today! We may only get a couple of hours play!

  16. Eng 8-1published at 5 overs

    Hello, what's happened there?!

Ollie Pope leaves a Kagiso Rabada delivery and, somehow, ends up toe-ending it just short of a diving third slip. That would have been a horrible way to get out.

Interesting from Ben Stokes in his programme notes. Says he wants another five years playing Test cricket.

There's a big cheer at Lord's as Zak Crawley pushes away off his pads for his first runs of the series.

I do find Ollie Pope quite stressful to watch at the start of his innings. There's body parts moving everywhere, a sort of skittish, frenetic energy hanging over him. He's off the mark, though, flicking a single down the ground.

Really good bowling this from Rabada, right on the money. His deliveries have been shaping in to Lees but this just stayed out there and drew the edge. A really good bit of bowling.

  20. Postpublished at 11:15 British Summer Time 17 August 2022

Having watched the replay, there was no need for Alex Lees to play at that Rabada delivery. It was rising on him and the shot was way too loose, nothing more than a hopeful push outside off stump.

Ollie Pope is the new batter for England.
