  7. South Africa on toppublished at 10:33 British Summer Time 18 August 2022

When play does start South Africa will be looking to press home the advantage they so impressively gained on day one.

Dean Elgar won the toss is favourable bowling conditions and the Proteas' fearsome attack proceeded to rip through the England top order.

Five England batters were out for single-figure scores, including opener Zak Crawley, who managed only nine to extend his run of Test innings without a half-century to 13.

Anrich Nortje, bowling in excess of 90mph, claimed 3-43, while Kagiso Rabada showed great skill for his 2-36.

The only batter to put up any resistance was Ollie Pope, who will resume this morning on 61 after a gutsy innings in testing circumstances.
