That's us done for the day.

You can catch up with Stephan Shemilt's report from Lord's and there's plenty of analysis over on the cricket page.

The highlights have started over on BBC Four - and you can watch it here.

There's also a men's Hundred match currently going on between Manchester Originals and Southern Brave.

We'll be back tomorrow to see what England can salvage before they bat again. In a bit.

I imagine the message will be 'we have been in worse situations so far this summer and got out of it'.

It will be very positive and that's the way they play. The game is set up for an extraordinary third innings which so far this summer we have had.

The plus side for England is the new ball is just three overs away when play resumes tomorrow.

If they can keep the lead down as much as they can...

As a bowler, you look at certain trends at certain venues and I haven't seen many people getting bounced out here. When Maharaj first comes in, yes you want to push him back. But he's most likely to get out in the first 10 balls so I don't mind a couple of bouncers but not a sustained plan.

Also, asking Broad and Anderson to come in and just bowl bouncers - it's a waste of energy. The South Africans waited until they came back for the second spell when they were that bit more tired. I think England missed a trick.

We know Ben Stokes' style is all in. There is no middle way or compromise. We had five slips in at one stage, but that's how Ben operates.

In hindsight when Keshav Maharaj came out to bat they obviously decided they were going to try and bounce him out. But fair play to Maharaj, who is a dangerous batter as we saw, he got underneath every single ball and didn't attempt to play it.

Two wickets in two overs for captain Ben Stokes, and another for Stuart Broad, sparked an England fightback...

But a superb, hard-hitting stand between Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj has left the tourists firmly on top.

We normally talk about the touring side going into a series without a much match practice. It is usually an advantage England have in the first Test.

We talk about the structure of the game so much. It makes zero sense that there is no first class cricket going on for anyone to play when there is a Test series going on and that has to change.

Openers Dean Elgar and Sarel Erwee shared an 85-run stand first up before it was broken in bizarre fashion by James Anderson.

South Africa steadily chipped away at England's lead, but England kept themselves in contention with the odd wicket either side of tea.

The last Test match South Africa played was in April. Kagiso Rabada was out injured for most of the T20s, so how much has he bowled? You can't bowl your overs on a treadmill.

As experienced bowlers, I'd expect Broad and Anderson to know what they need to do. You can't just rock up and bowl those 12 overs and think you're going to be Test match ready.

    Let's recap things, shall we?

England, resuming on 116-6, were dismissed for 165 inside the morning session, with Ollie Pope top-scoring with 73. Kagiso Rabada was hugely impressive in taking 5-52 for the Proteas.

There are some things that you can't substitute. Overs out in the middle you can't substitute, there is a certain sharpness when it comes to match intensity and it is so hard to replicate in nets. But both Broad and Anderson are experienced enough to know what they need to do.

They were slightly too short with the new ball and then England's bowlers all lost their lengths at the end. You have to take control and with two senior statesmen like that you know what you should be doing. I question whether they were quite ready.

It wasn't England's best day with the ball, it is not often you say that. It is almost a guarantee that they hit a length and put pressure on the opposition.

I called today 'jaffas and junk'. It is a little tongue in cheek but there was some absolute seeds flying around there from all four seamers. Jack Leach was great when he started, but it was mixed in with a release ball.

That is so unlike the England attack. Is it because they haven't played a red ball game for five weeks?

After that Ben Stokes burst and then a wicket for Stuart Broad, it felt as though England were working their way back into the match.

But that stand between Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj, coupled with some odd field placements, has closed that door down.

They're not out of it yet, not by any means - but it's going to be a tough task.

After the opening partnership, we thought South Africa were firmly in the driving seat but then England starting clawing their way back. But that last hour stopped that, that last partnership between Keshav and Jansen broke the back of England.

South Africa are firmly in control. The only thing you can say positive about England is that there is a new ball due in the morning. But really, the damage may already have been done.

That is very much South Africa's day.

They lead England by a more than handy 124 runs.

    Oh!

Marco Jansen leans back and cracks the penultimate ball of the day to the square leg boundary, where it beats a diving Jonny Bairstow and goes for four.

For England, it is handy getting this extra over because it means tomorrow there will only be three more until the second new ball.
