Darren: There's a very good cricketer in there somewhere, but the backing that Zak Crawley received earlier in the summer was possibly the worst thing for him. I think he needs to get back to County cricket and England need a Sam Robson/Adam Lyth for the next Test.

Alex Lees had a bit of luck earlier in his innings when he was dropped off the bowling of Rabada.

All luck seems to have deserted Zak Crawley, though. He is back in the hutch after being trapped lbw by Keshav Maharaj. It was umpire's call but when your luck is out, there is only one way that decision is going.

Four more to the England total as Rabada strays again and the ball flicks Pope's thigh pad before running away fine.

Those are the only runs from the over. That is a maiden for Rabada, nothing off the bat.

Surely it is only right to call time on Project Crawley now? At least for a while. Found wanting over and over again.

  5. Eng 33-1published at 10 overs

    Lees 11, Pope 5

Lees is determined to sweep Maharaj and is not put off by a couple of failed attempts. He gets hold of one eventually, not timed but hit well enough to get a single to deep square.

Meanwhile, Pope is happy to go back and tuck the ball behind square for one.

Time for two more overs in the session, maybe three at a push.

Dan Smith: Easy to kick Crawley when he’s down but humiliating him every Test is doing nothing for his confidence.

Bob Hawkins: Top sport’s played in the head & Crawley’s head’s not in the right place at the moment. For his own good he should be stood down.

Wayward from Rabada and the ball sails down leg, out of reach of Verreynne for four byes. I still think it's harsh that those go against the wicket-keeper.

Pope dabs the ball past gully for a couple and Lees ends the over with a punch down the ground for three. Useful runs in that over for England.

We've got around 10 minutes left before lunch.

If this Summer of Test Cricket has taught us anything it is to expect the unexpected. So I'm with Vic Marks on this one, and would be happy to help him drink the champagne bought by Nicholas (12:04).

Ollie Pope is in at three and gets off the mark with a single into the leg side.

Good move from Dean Elgar to bring the spinner on early, South Africa have the early wicket they craved.

Afraid not, Tuffers. We've just seen the ball-tracking on it and it was umpire's call but for height. It was still hitting middle stump pretty hard.

I would have had a look there as you have to see the ball turn up that slope.

I reckon there's a chance that might have been slipping down.

    Crawley lbw b Maharaj 13 (Eng 20-1)

The spinner does the trick and Crawley's troubles continue.

It was an attempted sweep from Crawley, he missed and was hit firmly on the pad. It looked out and Crawley agrees, he marches off without considering a review.

With the slope, you can never be 100% sure at Lord's but the England opener had no interest in going upstairs to check it.

Ooh, interesting. Keshav Maharaj is coming on to bowl for the first time in the match. An early go for the left-arm spinner in this innings.

Lees adds two to his score with a aback-foot punch through the covers. It comes off the toe of the bat but into the gap.

It's a poor shot to end the over, though. A wild hook shot as Rabada digs it in short. Lees got nowhere near it.

I'm in the Lower Edrich Stand, where every run from Zak Crawley's bat is gratefully applauded. It feels like there is a lot of good will towards him. I saw Crawley on the way to the nets this morning. He stopped for a photo with a young lad, whose dad then gave the opener a huge slap on the back.

That was Crawley's third or fourth leading edge. He was very early on it.

  17. Eng 16-0published at 6 overs

    Lees 5, Crawley 11

Crawley misses out of a leg-stump half-volley from Ngidi. He gets another leading edge and this one carries out to deep mid-wicket, bringing him a couple but it really should have been four.

He shows some restraint later in the over, letting a couple of tempters outside off go through to Verreynne.

I love watching Kagiso Rabada bowl. There is something magical about it.

  20. Eng 14-0published at 5 overs

Radaba is asking all sorts of questions that the England openers are struggling to find answers for at the moment.

The last ball of the over lifts sharply again and nips off the seam, too, as Lees wafts his bat at it. That would have been a very soft dismissal.
