Which comes first? Finally finding a Test-quality opening partnership or accepting that these days your openers need to play like it's a T20? Poor Crawley probably doesn't know whether he's coming or going with these different roles he's asked to play.

So Joe Root joins Alex Lees in the middle for what could be a pivotal afternoon session.

Another bad one for England and this match could be out of their reach (if it isn't already).

Yet another sensational Players' Dining Room lunch menu at Lord's.

My ham sandwich is looking pretty pathetic in comparison.

We all knew that playing the McCullum/Stokes way would produce matches like this. I for one am perfectly happy to accept that for the excitement it brings when it goes well. Better to be exciting, win some incredible victories but lose some horror shows, than be pedestrian, boring and probably lose anyway. Win or lose I think it's good for Test cricket. That said, it doesn't stop me wishing they'd bowl more sensibly at tail enders and put poor Crawley out of his misery - at least for now.

Where do England go from here? They lose. By 10 wickets. What were SA saying about Baz ball could make you look silly.

    Rich London

The whole 'Bazball' thing is just a distraction from the fact that we have so many players that are just not quite good enough to play Test cricket. The fact that Crawley is still there, despite being so shocking, tells me there's no-one banging down the door to get in.

Then a crushing blow with the last ball before lunch. Ollie Pope, who scored a gutsy 73 in the first innings, dismissed lbw off Maharaj for just five.

England limp into the interval on 38-2, still 123 runs behind South Africa's first innings total.

That meant a tricky 40 minute spell for England to negotiate before lunch, and Alex Lees got a life when Keegan Petersen dropped him in the slips off the bowling of Rabada.

No such luck for Zak Crawley, though. He was trapped lbw sweeping off Keshav Maharaj for 13 as his struggles with the bat continue.

Broad grabbed his second wicket of the morning to wrap up South Africa's innings when Lungi Ngidi edged through to Jonny Bairstow, who just about held on.

The Proteas all out for 326 with a very handy lead of 161.

The day actually got off to a brilliant start for England, with Stuart Broad taking a superb catch to remove Kagiso Rabada off Matthew Potts with just the third ball of the day.

England then persisted with short ball tactics despite taking the new ball, before Broad eventually pitched it up to Marco Jansen, who edged it through to Zak Crawley at second slip.

I'm going to join the players in grabbing some lunch - I'm not sure the offerings at BBC Towers will match up to Lord's but hope springs eternal - and I'll hand you over to Tom Mallows.

Will he be bringing you the beginnings of another famous England comeback or simply the next stage in South Africa's surge to victory?

    Trail by 123

England are in all sorts of trouble now. With those two wickets in the last 20 minutes of the session, South Africa have really hammered home their advantage.

The hosts need another 123 just to make South Africa bat again.

    Pope lbw b Maharaj 5 (Eng 38-2)

Three reds and Pope falls to the last ball before lunch!

It did go on with the arm but Pope was caught on the crease and the ball was thudding into leg stump.

Maharaj has his second, South Africa pile more misery on England.

Have South Africa got another before lunch? They think so. The ball skids on to Ollie Pope as he tries to shovel it to leg.

Was it sliding down? We'll soon see.
