Nicholas Smith: Re Vic Marks at 11:45. If England get out of this hole, I’ll pay for him to have the most expensive bottle of champagne at Lord's!
The third and fourth innings of Tests are when England have really come into their own this summer, albeit this is the first time they'll be batting in the third innings.
It'll be fascinating to see how Alex Lees and Zak Crawley approach the start of the innings in the next hour or so before lunch.
Also, it is worth pointing out that South Africa only added 37 runs in about an hour this morning. England took three wickets. So maybe the short ball ploy wasn't quite so bad, after all? Maybe?

That was an excellent reflex catch in the end.
Ngidi c Bairstow b Broad 0 (SA 326 all out)
Great catch from Bairstow, eventually!
Another full ball from broad, another edge and this time it flies to Bairstow third slip. It goes at chest height and escapes his grasp initially before reacting superbly to swipe down and take it with his left hand at the second attempt.
South Africa lead by 161 after the first innings, that's a big lead. What can England do from here?

It is a mini mystery why James Anderson hasn't bowled yet, unless he isn't fully fit.
Stokes responds with a big in-swinger that raps Nortje on the gloves as he tried to cut it and there is a play and a miss to finish.
England will just want this innings done now.
Lead by 161
Back-to-back boundaries for Anrich Nortje. He's got his eye in now!
The South African guides the first of them between the slips and gully before thrashing the next through extra cover.
Ben Stokes swings a boot at the turf in frustration.

safcpete: We have all seen this short ball tactic fail time and again this summer. This is so frustrating to watch. Only a few weeks back Bumrah took us to the cleaners doing this. Wasting the new ball. Bowl properly please.
Frustrating as spells like this morning might be, the CricViz stats at 11:12 suggest it has worked quite well this summer...

I don't mind a few short balls to the tailenders but you surely have to give yourself the option to bowl a fuller length? And you can't really do that if you don't have any protection on the off side in front of square.
But anyway, it's nine down and if England win the game I'll shut up.

Foakes makes a very good diving stop down the leg side to end the Broad over. Lungi Ngidi, in at number 11, having safely negotiated five balls of that wicket maiden.

That's the way to get 'em.
Jansen c Crawley b Broad 48 (SA 318-9)
Edged and gone.
A full delivery, wide of off stump and just enough movement to find the edge as Marco Jansen drives at it.
It goes at the perfect catching height and Zak Crawley makes no mistake at second slip. Nine down, one to go for England.

That is a hostile delivery, the ball really could have gone anywhere. But that is what Ben Stokes brings.
Really good ball to finish from Stokes. It is a short one but it surprises Nortje, leaping up at the tailender, who fends it off. It lands safely and was actually very well played.

England are in a pretty big hole, but they have been in big holes in every Test match this summer.
Over-pitched by Stokes and Nortje drives beautifully back down the ground for four! Top shot.
Is it worth testing him out with a bouncer?
Lead by 149
The change to a more traditional approach doesn't bring immediate success for England and Nortje gets a single with an inside edge.
That means he'll be on strike for the start of the next over. It will still be Stokes but the field does look more conventional.

JayRad: Anrich Nortje averages 6 with the bat. Can we please just bowl at the stumps? Thanks.
Three more for Nortje, he's well set for the short ball - how did he know it was coming!? - and hits it over extra cover. Not timed but always safe.
Jansen then pushes a single into the covers as he closes on a half-century and what's this? Two slips and a gully for Nortje. England are going old school... Jimmy Anderson is even warming up.
