Very good from Rabada, finding some extra bounce to Crawley and a leading edge pops out into the off side but into a gap.

Another leading edge next ball, this one goes more quickly and through the covers. Two for Crawley, he won't care how the runs come at the moment.

    It is all very tense.

  3. Eng 11-0published at 4 overs

That is a tight leave from Lees. Ngidi is attacking him from around the wicket, the England opener shoulders arms and the ball is perilously close to off stump.

Just a single to Crawley from the over.

I am not sure who will go on to win this game, South Africa are certainly in a very strong position. What is frustrating and always upsetting to see is the lack of support we seem to give this England team. We might not always agree with the methods or tactics used, but surely there is the eternal optimist within all of us?

Prior to that drop, Lees had thumped a lovely shot through the covers for England's first boundary of the innings.

Either side of that, Crawley drops the ball into the off side and scampers through for singles. Good cricket.

That was second slip's catch, he would have pouched that at chest height.

  7. dropped catch

Lees dropped on 4published at 2.4 overs

    Eng 9-0

Let off for Lees! The left-hander drives at a full delivery from Rabada, gets a thick outside edge and Keegan Petersen dives across from third slip and tips away from Aiden Markram at second.

It would have been a regulation chance for Markram.

Kyle Verreynne really had to go all the way to his left to stop that from going for four byes. That was a spectacular take.

  9. Eng 3-0published at 2 overs

It's a very good start from Lungi Ngidi, bowling at good pace and getting ample seam movement back in to Zak Crawley.

Crawley gets off the mark with two tucked to square leg before sneaking a single to cover. In between, Kyle Verreynne spectacularly dives to take the ball down leg as Ngidi strays.

Here is the second of those two Broad wickets. Jonny Bairstow took the catch at the second attempt. It was a smart grab in the end.

We are so lucky to have Broad, he makes things happen and always backs up his chat. Last night he says we have to win the third day, today he takes a worldie catch and picks up the other two wickets. Always in the shadow of Anderson but should be appreciated as much.

This England side have repeatedly turned situations around this summer where we have said 'they are never going to win from here'.

So are they going to do it five times in a row?

It's a maiden to start from Rabada. Alex Lees is happy to leave a few deliveries wide outside off.

He does go after one with a cut shot but ends up just getting an under-edge that just bounces at his feet.

Kagiso Rabada, fresh from a first-innings five-for, has the new ball in hand and will get things started for South Africa.

You feel England will have to score a minimum of 360 and even that might not be enough.

Dean Elgar has South Africa in a huddle and is delivering what seems to be quite a forthright final message to his team before the head out onto the lush green Lord's grass.

The tourists are in control of this match, a good hour before lunch and they could all-but guarantee themselves victory.

I love this situation. You see players under pressure both in the game and their place in the side.

It is a big innings for Zak Crawley but also for Alex Lees, who hasn't exactly set the game alight recently.

When you watch Test batters who you know are under scrutiny, like Zak Crawley, you will feel that. So it is quite an agonising prospect to see him go out there. And it is probably hard for him to clear the mind and just go out and bat.

England would love to have an opener of Strauss' class available to them going into this innings.

Lees and/or Crawley may go on to have good, long Test careers but both could do with a score pretty soon if they want to cement their place in the side.

I saw Andrew Strauss this morning, coming back from either the gym or a run, wearing an old England training shirt. Bearing in mind he retired 10 years ago, he's got good mileage out of it. Sustainable and thrifty. What you'd expect from a knight of the realm.
