  1. Eng 219-5published at 61 overs

Ben Foakes using the crease well to Keshav Maharaj as he leans forward then transfers his weight to the back foot to punch the ball for a single.

A game of cat and mouse between England's batters and South Africa's spinners at the moment.

Stokes is absorbing the pressure but you can tell it's not going to be too long until he tries to exert that pressure on Simon Harmer.

  3. Eng 217-5published at 60 overs

You can say that again Daniel.

Ben Stokes looks to up the ante to Simon Harmer's fourth ball as he plonks his front pad down the pitch and attempts to slog sweep it, but fails to make contact.

We could dub that shot the 'air fryer' in fact.

Stokes is going to get twitchy, he's not going to like just sitting there and propping forward.

  5. Eng 215-5published at 59 overs

Left-armer spinner Keshav Maharaj round the wicket to Ben Foakes with a s slip and short leg in place. His fourth ball is a tad over pitched and Foakes is able to whip it square for a couple of runs.

Both sides feeling each other out after lunch. Speaking of lunch, my colleague Amy Lofthouse has just being talking about having "air fried" fish and chips.

Food fried without oil, apparently. Is this a thing now? Feel a little out the loop on this one.

You get the impression that Ben Stokes is just weighing up his options at the moment. But he's not the kind of player who is just going to let Simon Harmer lob it up on a length for a few overs so expect something to happen.

  7. Eng 213-5published at 58 overs

Ben Foakes works away a single off Simon Harmer's second ball to pick up a single. Ben Stokes, however, remains somewhat circumspect in his approach and carefully prods and defends at the rest of the off-spinner's over.

The spin today has shown South Africa were justified with their selection of two spinners. Yesterday they took that gamble by batting first and will be behind in the first innings. But there is interesting cricket ahead with this pitch.

  9. Eng 212-5published at 57 overs

Ben Stokes attempts a reverse sweep to a delivery that stays low and turns from Keshav Maharaj, but it spins past his off stump.

The England skipper is a little more watchful in the rest of the over and blocks out a maiden.

Simon Harmer continues, so spin from both ends.

Anyway, Ben Foakes and Ben Stokes are purposefully striding back out to the middle. Keshav Maharaj has the ball in his hand.

  11. Postpublished at 13:41 British Summer Time 26 August 2022

Ben Foakes overturned an lbw shout from Keshav Maharaj, but quickly got over it to strike Simon Harmer for a boundary not long after.

Thankfully, it looks like an existing injury that Stokes is managing as opposed to a fresh problem.

South Africa then turned to spin and the England skipper efficiently slog-swept Simon Harmer for six as he and Ben Foakes began building a lead.

A period of consolidation followed before Ben Stokes started to find his rhythm. He skipped down the pitch to beautifully drive Lungi Ngidi for four down the ground.

Although moments later pulled up just before drinks with a knee problem after running a single.

England opener Zak Crawley's vigil was ended not long after by Anrich Nortje after a 101-ball 38.

It was a testing first hour for England's batters. Jonny Bairstow managed to find the boundary, before he was dismissed just short of his half-century.

Thanks Sam. As Tuffers said, that felt like a proper session of Test cricket. Let's take a quick look back over the story of the morning over our butties.

The players are taking lunch and if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me.

I'll leave you in the capable hands of Timothy Abraham for the remainder of the lunch break and a crucial afternoon session...

All smiles from Stokes and Foakes as they walk off for lunch. They've added 65 for the sixth wicket to put England in a very healthy position.

A little bit of Test cricket broke out this morning! Great to watch the South Africa quick bowlers this morning, and then a bit of spin to follow that. Ben Stokes and Ben Foakes have both batted really well.
