A skimmer! It would have been some catch! You're making two of those out of 10 I reckon.

SA 35-1
Nearly for Ollie Robinson!
Sarel Erwee pushes forward with hard hands and a healthy outside edge flies towards Zak Crawley, who almost gets his fingers underneath the ball as it bounces in front of him at second slip.
Actually, that just brushed the tips of Crawley's fingers as he thrust a hand forward. It would have been a blinder...

Had my Transpennine Express train not been cancelled this morning I would have seen that wicket in person. Delay Repay will bring back the money but not the memories...

It began muggy and overcast but the sky is clearing. It does have a good bowling feel about it today though and that was an exhilarating start from England.
James Anderson is not impressed as Stuart Broad goes diving after a Keegan Petersen push and ends up parrying it behind him, allowing Petersen to nab a single. He's also taken a nasty bump to the hand in the process.
Another Anderson delivery goes nipping past Sarel Erwee's outside edge to wrap up another good over.

The chances of a three-day finish have just risen dramatically.

Kay: The sound those stumps made as they were skittled. Beautiful
Kevin Ticehurst: What a start Jimmy, love seeing that off stump cartwheeling!!!
James Gulleford: Oh Jimmy you beauty!!! We love you, keep on bowling as long as you can!

Oh, that would have been unfortunate!
Sarel Erwee gets a whack on the thigh pad from Ollie Robinson and is hugely fortunate that the ball doesn't deflect back onto the stumps.
Ollie Robinson will replace Joe Root.

What a sight that is. Jimmy Anderson is 40 years old but he'll still absolutely love that. You dream of uprooting stumps like that as a boy and he's still at it now.
It will, genuinely, be devastating when James Anderson eventually decides to call it a day.

Keegan Petersen, wisely, lets his first delivery go sailing through to Ben Foakes.
Fifteen minutes in and James Anderson has got rid of the South Africa captain. An ideal start for England.
Keegan Petersen is the new batter at the crease.

It kept low! One of those ones where you're trapped in the crease as a batter and you know you're done. There's been some inconsistent bounce, we've seen two climb and that one skids through low. What a start for England!
Elgar b Anderson 11 (SA 33-1)
Oh!
I mean, there's bowled, and then there's bowled. Dean Elgar's off stump has come flying out of the ground, undone by a James Anderson delivery that has kept low and scuttled past his defensive prod and smack into the stumps. That'll make a great photo.
An inside edge from the bat of Sarel Erwee goes dribbling along the ground for a couple, before James Anderson beats Dean Elgar all ends up with another rising delivery.

I mean, both these batters are left-handers, so I can understand opening with Root to an extent, but this ball is only 10 overs old. I'd have let the seamers have a quick blast this morning, personally, then chucked it to Root a little later on.
Naturally, Root immediately gets a delivery to turn and bounce and go leaping up towards Dean Elgar's shoulder.
Joe Root is going to carry on. Because why not?

A good fancy dress turnout in the temporary stand today. Some Royals, and a large group who have come as traffic cones. They must be very warm this morning...
