England got the perfect start to the session as Ollie Robinson and James Anderson removed the openers, Dean Elgar and and Sarel Erwee.
The crowd and the players at The Oval started the day with a minute's silence for Queen Elizabeth II and a rendition of the national anthem.

It has been all England this morning. Conditions have been in favour of the seamers, but England have exploited it.
South Africa somehow have to get back into it. There are promising signs with this partnership but they need to bat for another session-and-a-half to give themselves an opportunity to even draw this Test match.
Zondo 21, Jansen 17
Marco Jansen and Khaya Zondo take South Africa through to lunch after a steady partnership, having come together with the score at 36-6.
But it was still a brilliant morning session from England's bowlers, particularly Ollie Robinson, who has 4-21.
As this is only a three-day Test, that start could prove to be crucial for England's hopes of winning the match and the series.
Jack Leach whizzes through a maiden that grants England the opportunity to give Jimmy Anderson one more over before lunch.

This partnership has now lasted 10 overs and one ball. It is only the second partnership in the opening innings of this series to last beyond 10 overs.
Another good over from James Anderson as South Africa just edge closer to the lunch break.
It has been a useful partnership between Khaya Zondo and Marco Jansen.

In first class matches Khaya Zondo averages a little under 29 against seam and 44 against spin.

Whichever member of the crowd returning the ball after that Zondo six made a horrible mess of it, the throw not even clearing the advertising boards. Even Ben Stokes saw the funny side of it.

South Africa will be aiming to get up to 120-150 and then hope the bowlers them a favour and get England out cheaply as well.
If they potentially roll England out for 180-200 South Africa are still in the contest. But if they are out for 80 it is a long way to get back into the match, even if they have the bowlers.
Too short and wide from Leach, and Zondo cuts it away for four runs.
An expensive over.
Well, Khaya Zondo doesn't fancy being as defensive against the spinner. He lofts Jack Leach down the ground for the first six of the day.

Anything that gets a bit wide of off stump Zondo is flinging his arms at it.
Khaya Zondo goes for a big drive at a wide ball from James Anderson and is very lucky not to get an edge. It's an uncharacteristic shot, as he has been quite disciplined in his innings so far.

Ollie Robinson's 4-21 from eight overs is the best opening spell for England in the first innings of a Test since Stuart Broad's 8-15 against Australia in 2015.
Another big appeal from Stuart Broad for lbw, but it is quite clearly going down the leg side and Ben Stokes indicates that with an arm outstretched. He doesn't go for the review this time.
Can South Africa make it through the next 20 minutes until lunch without losing another wicket?

I like the way Ben Stokes has used his bowlers today. They have identified how best to use this new ball as we have seen that once it gets to 30 overs old then you can start to bat.
James Anderson returns, and is straight back into his rhythm with a maiden.
He hits Marco Jansen on the pads and appeals with confidence, but umpire Richard Kettleborough isn't convinced. And neither is Ben Stokes, as there's no review.
It was probably missing leg stump.
