    A perfect start for England.

A lot of it is down to mindset, with the players aware of the shortened game. South Africa were expected to play for the draw so England had to make them play, with Robinson and Anderson setting the tone.

Sometimes you get this kind of morning as a bowling group, where everything goes your way.

  2. SA 54-6published at 17 overs

Broad has another enthusiastic appeal for an lbw on Khaya Zondo, but the batter is saved by an inside edge.

Zondo has worked hard for his nine from 26 balls.

  3. SA 52-6published at 16 overs

    Zondo 7, Jansen 14

That's eight overs in a row now from Ollie Robinson, who is seeking a fifth wicket. There is a dark cloud just hovering over The Oval, which England will be hoping will blow over.

  4. SA 52-6published at 15.3 overs

Ollie Robinson bowls a bouncer at Marco Jansen that hits him on the shoulder, which is surprising given that he's approximately six foot nine.

But Jansen isn't that bothered, and responds with a straight drive for four down the ground.

    Alex Hartley
Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

There is one bowler in the world who always thinks it is out, and that is Stuart Broad.

  6. Postpublished at 12:26 British Summer Time 10 September 2022

    Jonathan Agnew
BBC cricket correspondent on Test Match Special

Stokes is cursing, 'why do I listen to Stuart Broad?'

  7. Not outpublished at 15 overs

    SA 48-6

Yes, it's going over the stumps.

That's two unsuccessful reviews from England now.

  8. England reviewpublished at 15 overs

Stuart Broad hits Khaya Zondo on the pad, and appeals very enthusiastically.

He manages to convince Ben Stokes to go for another review, but it might be a bit too high.

  9. SA 45-6published at 14.3 overs

Marco Jansen scores South Africa's first boundary in a long time, as Stuart Broad just strays onto leg stump and he clips it through mid-wicket.

  10. How's stat?!published at 12:19 British Summer Time 10 September 2022

    Andy Zaltzman
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

At 36-6, this is the worst start a team has made to an Oval test match since 1882.

  11. SA 41-6published at 14 overs

Ollie Robinson has got 4-17 from seven overs.

  12. SA 40-6published at 13.2 overs

A bit too full from Ollie Robinson and he is driven down the ground by Marco Jansen for three welcome runs.

  13. SA 37-6published at 13 overs

A brilliant over from Stuart Broad.

Khaya Zondo is still there for South Africa, on seven. He and Marco Jansen have got to try and rebuild something here but batting looks very tricky.

  14. Not outpublished at 12.3 overs

    SA 37-6

Marco Jansen survives as the ball has beaten both bat and pad, and somehow missed the stumps, too.

  15. England reviewpublished at 12.3 overs

    Is that seven wickets?

It's an absolute beauty from Broad that jags between the bat and pad of Marco Jansen, and somehow has missed everything. Or has it?

Broad is convinced that there's an edge and persuades Ben Stokes to go for a review.

    Alison Mitchell
    BBC Test Match Special

Ollie Robinson could take an absolute hatful today.

  17. SA 36-6published at 12 overs

Keshav Maharaj, South Africa's spin bowler, is the new batter.

Ben Stokes could not have asked for much more from his bowlers this morning, they have pretty much been unplayable.

  18. Postpublished at 12:09 British Summer Time 10 September 2022

    Alex Hartley
Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

That's a poor shot from Mulder, one of the worst deliveries of the day, it's a big outside edge and Foakes takes the catch. England are in the driving seat.

    Mulder c Foakes b Robinson 3 (SA 36-6)

Ollie Robinson has another! The perfect start after drinks.

It's a loose drive from Wiaan Mulder, and he edges through to Ben Foakes.

My colleague Tim Oscroft just suggested that Foakes could be on for the record number of catches by an England keeper in an innings, and right on cue he has another.

Here's how Stuart Broad got England's fourth wicket of Ryan Rickelton.
