When you look at the South African line up there is a lot of of inexperience but with England there is no Bairstow and the new boy Harry Brook, so there is the capacity for some collapses.

  2. SA 15-2published at 4 overs

Another very good over from Ollie Robinson, who has barely strayed from his line and length this morning.

There is some cloud hovering over The Oval but the sun is just starting to break through.

  4. SA 11-2published at 3 overs

Ryan Rickelton is the new batter, who didn't play in the first two Tests.

But it doesn't look that way as he drives Anderson for the first boundary of the day with a drive through the covers.

That was a comfortable height, a nice catch by Foakes but you would expect him to catch it 99 times out of 100. A tentative prod, and a lovely edge.

  6. wicket

    Erwee c Foakes b Anderson 0 (SA 7-2)

    Anderson gets England's second!

Another good length ball makes Sarel Erwee prod at it and the ball flies off the outside edge to Ben Foakes, who takes a good diving catch.

A brilliant start for England, with both openers out inside three overs.

  7. SA 2-1published at 2 overs

What an over from Ollie Robinson. Keegan Petersen is in at three, and leaves his first ball that is inches away from his off stump.

Ben Stokes has five slips in now. Pressure on the South African batters already.

It was full length, came through the gate and I am not sure he got anything on it.

That feels like a real release of emotion with the sight of that stump coming out of the ground. That is a significant early blow so early in this game.

  10. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 1.4 overs

    Elgar b Robinson 1 (SA 2-1)

Bowled him! A beauty from Ollie Robinson to get the first wicket of the day.

A full length delivery nips back sharply to beat Dean Elgar's defence and take off stump out the ground. There really wasn't much the batter could do about that one, and England are absolutely delighted.

He's only bowled four balls, but Robinson has looked in brilliant form.

  11. SA 1-0published at 1.3 overs

Ollie Robinson finds some real swing from the other end, jagging a couple through Dean Elgar's defences to leave the slip cordon with their hands on their heads.

    A lovely start.

  12. SA 1-0published at 1 over

Just the single from James Anderson's over, as he settles into his day's work with ease, as he pretty much always does.

It will be interesting how South Africa approach this innings, knowing that they've only got three days' play. England, as Ben Stokes implied pre-match, will be playing to force a result throughout.

That was very, very moving indeed, the 20,000 crowd spontaneously joining in. And what a wonderful performance by Laura Wright.

    Very emotional indeed.

God Save the King echoes around The Oval, followed by a round of applause, and the players make their way to the middle for play to begin.

James Anderson will take the first over.

The minute's silence is followed by a chime of the bell, and then the South African national anthem.

A military guard of honour is now taking place on the outfield, followed by the two teams.

This will be followed by a minute's silence before the national anthems are played - although the crowd has already fallen completely silent.

All of the players are wearing black armbands.
