  1. Eng 48-0published at 11 overs

    Target 130

Marco Jansen puts the ball down in the gully once more, no bat on the ball this time though, it was off the thigh pad of Alex Lees. Kagiso Rabada is whistling in with real intent still, causing Lees trouble from the angle.

Alex Lees is taking quite a pounding this over.

  3. Eng 47-0published at 10 overs

    Target 130

Still a very healthy crowd in as we tick past 18:00 BST. We expect play to go on for another half hour or so, though it looks plenty light enough to me (200+ miles away).

You feel this game is slipping away from South Africa at the moment.

  5. Eng 46-0published at 9.3 overs

Just 90 to win with 10 wickets and a day in the tank. Surely this will be an England series win now. Right?

Anrich Nortje is into the attack, Alex Lees clipping him away for runs first up but then being surprised by the pace of the fast bowler next, steering an edge away for four more.

  6. Eng 40-0published at 9 overs

    Target 130

I remember that Tuffers effort. No sign of any spin today as Rabada steams in once more. Plenty of hustle and bustle as Zak Crawley swats away baseball style but can only pick out a fielder on the bounce.

Anrich Nortje is warming up intently.

There have only been three chases of below 130 that have ended in failure at The Oval.

England were all out for 77 chasing 85 against Australia in 1882, the game that gave rise to the Ashes. Australia were then bowled out for 44 chasing 111 in 1896.

There has just been one more since then. In 1997 Australia chasing 124 were bowled out for 104, featuring 4-27 from Phil Tufnell who took 11 wickets in the match.

  8. Eng 39-0published at 8 overs

    Target 130

A costly no-ball from Marco Jansen, South Africa could do without any sundries on the card. Alex Lees now getting in behind every ball like prime Chanderpaul.

As I say that he coughs the ball up into the air off the top of his bat, maybe the handle, but gets away with one as it falls safe.

Whack your way to 30 double quick lads then bat us out for the day...

  10. Eng 36-0published at 7 overs

    Target 130

Kagiso Rabada bends his back and piles one into the body of Alex Lees. Good battle between bat and ball now. Here's his opening partner Zak Crawley sending Rabada for runs a touch earlier on.

  11. Eng 35-0published at 6 overs

    Target 130

A collective sigh of almost relief as the pace comes down a touch from England in that Marco Jansen over. They've certainly set their stall out. Plenty of pace from Jansen though with a short snorter that whistles past Alex Lees' nose.

The opening partnership between Zak Crawley and Alex Lees is averaging just 23.5 this summer.

They have played 12 Tests and just one half-century has been scored between the two of them.

  13. Eng 34-0published at 5 overs

    Target 130

Alex Lees leaves a ball to go through to the keeper. Not many dot balls in the opening five overs!

  14. Eng 33-0published at 4.3 overs

    Target 130

It's not been pretty at times but this is some start from England. All-out attack. Zak Crawley is fortunate to see an inside edge drop safe.

That was completely miscued by Alex Lees. He was trying to thrash it out to the mid-wicket boundary.

    It's only been four overs!

This feels like a T20 at the moment.

  17. Eng 31-0published at 4 overs

    Target 130

Chance! Another miscue from Alex Lees but he just about gets away with that, an ugly pull ends up over the dive of Keshav Maharaj. England need fewer than 100 now.

We were questioning whether three days would be enough to force a result, but look at where we are.

There is so much time left.
