  1. Ind 130-5published at 34.4 overs

Four more through mid-on for Jadeja, this time off Anderson - another gorgeous shot.

Later in the over, Pant whips the ball through mid-wicket and that slow outfield does cost him a boundary. Potts gave chase and flicked it back in time to save a run.

India are going well but that could change now, England have managed to convince the umpires that the ball needs changing.

This is a vital passage of play as the grey clouds above drift past the ground and the sun starts to shine.

  4. Ind 121-5published at 34 overs

Pant gets in on the act to end the over. He's on the front foot but up on his tip toes to meet the ball at the top of its bounce and crash it through extra cover for four. He holds the pose before realising the outfield has really slowed up and the ball only just gets there.

This is an important partnership for India and it's so far, so good for them.

  5. Ind 114-5published at 33.1 overs

Superb from Ravindra Jadeja. Full and straight from Broad, the India batter waits for it and then punches it back through mid-on with conviction. No need to run for that.

We've got another delay as the India physio comes out to tend to Rishabh Pant. It looks like it might be a bit of cramp?

What a start for Matty Potts! I've not been this excited about a young English seamer since.... err... Sajid Mahmood.

Rishabh Pant has been coming down the pitch and talking to Ravindra Jadeja between every ball of his innings so far.

  9. Ind 110-5published at 33 overs

There is a sizeable England appeal as Anderson hits Jadeja on the back leg from over the wicket. It's turned down and Anderson is already marching back to his mark as Stokes asks others whether it is worth a review. Pitched well outside leg and possible a bit high.

Common sense prevails and no review taken.

  10. Husband and wife umpiring teampublished at 15:19 British Summer Time 1 July 2022

A Blackburn couple will become the first husband and wife to take charge of an English professional fixture together this weekend.

Former Pakistan international Naeem Ashraf and his wife Jasmine Naeem will officiate the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy match between Lightning and Western Storm at Loughborough on Saturday.

The pair began umpiring when Ashraf, 49, retired from playing in 2010.

“We’ve done it together in leagues in Lancashire and Greater Manchester and nobody’s realised that we were married," said Jasmine .

"Now we’re honoured that we’re getting this opportunity on such a big stage.”

I can't think of another time anyone ever uses the word foreshortening. It's like how we never used furlough until the pandemic struck.

  12. drinks break

    Ind 109-5published at 32 overs

Ouch! Another misfield from Stokes and to compound matters, he slips and lands on his back as he turned quickly to try and retrieve the ball.

The physio will check him over while everyone else takes drinks. A very good hour for England since the restart.

  13. Not outpublished at 15:17 British Summer Time 1 July 2022

    Ind 108-5

Once the soft signal was not out, it was always likely to stay that way. It was close but based on the replays, you could not say for certain that Root got his fingers underneath the ball.

That is what the third umpire decides. It stays not out. Broad is less sure but it looked a fair decision.

  14. Umpire reviewpublished at 31.4 overs

    Ind 108-5

Is that a sixth wicket for England? It's a beauty from Broad to find Jadeja's edge and it might be a brilliant catch from Joe Root. He's not sure though and it goes upstairs. Soft signal is not out.

In terms of opponents for Brendon McCullum to come up against first, India are just as good as his native New Zealand, given his IPL connections.

The Shreyas Iyer wicket was no strangle. It was a definite plan to target the hip - that's why the leg slip was in place. In the end, the catch was brilliantly taken by Billings instead.

This is the time for your premier fast bowler, James Anderson, to dig deep and squeeze out a few more overs. Lights are on, it's cloudy overhead. Tell Jimmy he can have a break after tea.

  17. Ind 107-5published at 31 overs

Leach's spell is ended after just one over, it seems to have been just to facilitate a change of ends for Jimmy Anderson.

The England seamer holds a tight line to Jadeja early in the over before tempting the left-hander with a fuller one pushed across him. Left well alone and that's a maiden.

  18. ouch!

    Ind 107-5published at 30 overs

    Pant 17, Jadeja 5

Pant advances once more, this time to the reintroduced Stuart Broad. The outcome is another thick inside edge into the legside for one.

Broad then hits Jadeja in a rather delicate area but a quick check and all seems to be well.

Talking of work and cricket, I am unavoidably at a conference today (being the organiser I have no choice but to be here - but I'm kicking myself for the timing). The conference venue is the University of Birmingham - so agonisingly close to Edgbaston I can practically hear the wickets fall.

  20. 100 runs

    Ind 105-5published at 29 overs

The over starts with a really rarity, a misfield from Ben Stokes. That allows Pant two bonus runs to bring up the 100 for India.

We're also getting a first look at images from Ollie Pope's helmet camera at short leg - well worth keep an eye out for on the highlights at 7pm on BBC Four and on iPlayer.

Anyway, Pant keeps his powder dry this time around against Leach but Jadeja decides to go after the England spinner, skipping down and hitting the last ball of the over towards long-on for four.
