  1. Ind 182-5published at 45.0 overs

Another crisp stroke from Rishabh Pant. This time he square drives through the point region off a delivery with only the merest hint of width from Matthew Potts. Relatively orthodox batting from the India wicketkeeper, really.

He just stands there and admires the shot. He's so quick to latch onto anything loose isn't he?

  3. Ind 178-5published at 44.2 overs

Like a long jumper unhappy with his run-up, Matthew Potts reaches the point of delivery and continues through without bowling before breaking out into a chuckle.

His second attempt beats Rishabh Pant's outside edge, prompting gasps from the crowd, before the left-hander beautifully drives Potts for four through the covers.

Interesting chat on TMS with former England women's spinner Holy Colvin, who is sports competition manager for cricket at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Daniel Norcross firmly in favour of cricket in multi-sport events and especially at the Olympic Games in the future.

"It's a great way to spread the game to other parts of the globe. China, for example, might start to get behind cricket with Olympics medals on the line," Norcross said.

It would certainly be huge for the funding of Associate member nations, and prospective members.

Ravindra Jadeja has been the 'Steady Eddie' alongside Pant and is unbeaten on 32 from 65 balls. He's still had his attacking moments, though.

However, India hit back - and it won't surprise you who led the counterattack. Rishabh Pant is 53 not out from 52 balls, with six fours and one six.

India were teetering at 95-8 after Shreyas Iyer flicked one down leg and Sam Billings took a superb catch.

The big wicket in the afternoon session. Good bowling from the Durham man with the former India skipper caught in two minds.

Thanks Sam. Top stint. The weather has reflected the play, really. Sunshine followed by clouds. Quiet periods followed by lots of action. England were in charge but India have counterattacked superbly. It's really ebbed and flowed.

Let's briefly recap the key moments you may have missed in the afternoon session.

A good session then once the rain abated. Reasons for both sides to be satisfied.

Over to Timothy Abraham to take you through tea and beyond.

  11. Ind 174-5published at 44 overs

Ben Stokes oversteps twice more, that's now 99 no-balls in Test cricket for the England captain. Those are the only runs from the over and that is tea.

England had an excellent first hour, India hit back in the second. It's been a good afternoon of Test cricket.

With Anderson, Potts and Leach taking the bulk of the wickets this summer, is it reasonable to question Broad's contribution?

Ravindra Jadeja is reminding Rishabh Pant that it is the last over before tea. Not that it will make much difference...

  14. Ind 172-5published at 43 overs

    Pant 53, Jadeja 32

A hugely valuable knock from Pant, helping to take India out of trouble - and doing so in a typically entertaining manner.

Stokes will bowl the last over of the session.

  15. 50 runs

50 for Rishabh Pantpublished at 42.5 overs

    Ind 172-5

A 10th Test half-century for Pant, brought up with a boundary! It looked like little more than a flick legside but the timing was spot on and the ball just kept going and beat the man coming around from behind square.

  16. How's stat?!published at 16:11 British Summer Time 1 July 2022

    Andy Zaltzman
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

Just to highlight the challenge facing Jack Leach: Rishabh Pant against left arm spin in Tests has scored 247 runs off 192 balls and been out three times, averaging 82 with a strike rate of 128 per 100 balls.

Ravindra Jadeja averages 62 at a rate of 89 per 100 balls. So they have been dominant players against left-arm spin.

Patrick Brennan: Tempting Michael Bracewell with Jack Leach is one thing, but Rishabh Pant is on a completely different level...

  18. Ind 167-5published at 42 overs

    Pant 49, Jadeja 30

Things have quietened down since that three-ball blitz from Pant off Leach a few overs back. The scoreboard is still ticking over, though, and Stokes helps India along with another front-foot no-ball.

Time for maybe two more overs before tea.

Shane O'Neill: With Pant, you have to set the right field and bowl consistently wide of his off stump. He will edge one eventually.

What has impressed me with England is how inventive England have been with their field placings, challenging convention. They have hardly had a cover point all day.

More evidence of the Ben Stokes style of captaincy.
